High Fuel Consumption

I own a 535GT and was wondering is it normal that a full tank of petrol RON 95 fuel, which is about 60 liter, can only travel about 400km averagely? I found the consumption is very high. Please help.

Fuel economy is very much a driving style and conditions thing. The vehicle is quite heavy, so if there is a lot of stop and go, it won't 'go' very far on a tank. It excels at steady-state driving, like most any other vehicle. Beating everyone from the stop light and not anticipating a red light and jumping on the brakes at the last moment make the worst out of a bad situation. Cold starts verses running longer make a big difference as can idling. The vehicle is designed to turn on and start driving...not to sit idling. Course, none of these may apply to your situation, but are common things that affect mileage.

I'm not conversant in the different methods of rating octane, but RON of 95 may be excessive, and a lower grade may work just as well for less money. The manual calls for a minimum of 91, but uses a different grading scale...not sure of the conversion factors.

I picked up mine in Germany and am waiting for it to be redelivered here at home in the states. I didn't reset the computer's fuel economy gauge while I was driving it in Germany. Drove over 1100Km, and from an indicated 1 mile on the odometer, the computer said 23.6mpg (didn't do the conversion to l/100Km). Some of that was at close to 160km/h on the autobahn, and some was crawling in the city, but there weren't too many short trips...generally, I was driving from one vacation spot to the next, and once there, mostly walked rather than drove. I expect with a few more miles, that the vehicle will improve. I did try to abide by the breakin rules from the manual - no high acceleration forced downshifts, and kept it below 100mph/160Km/h. That didn't keep me from cruising at nearly 100mph on the autobahn, though.

I'd have a diesel, but BMW doesn't sell them in the USA except on two models, and the GT isn't one of them.

I get b/w 450- 500 kms on a long highway drive from a full tank. This drastically drops to approx. 350 kms-400kms on town stop'n go drive.

Seems to be OK on any of the premiums, BP or Shell usually.

Garage List
2010 f07 SE GT  [0.00]
14,000m on the clock and average mpg since delivery is 37.6 using standard diesel. Driving is a mixture of 120m motorway runs and short 22m trips in and out of London. Motorway driving gets me 40 -41 mpg.

After about 2400 miles, one 800-mile day on the road, and a week or so of short in-town trips while at my destination, I just got back and averaged 28.1mpg (US) on the trip. When strictly highway, it was over 30-mpg. I'm pleased, but would have been more pleased with the 530d verses the 535i. The rear-wheel drive would have been better than my x-drive, but it is far better than my old Infiniti M35x, and I arrived feeling much fresher! The active seats do help on a long trip, and I'm glad I chose that option.
