Hi-fi Professional - does DVD playback come built-in?
I ordered the Hifi Professional with my car but did not specify DVD playback capability. Should I assume that DVD playback comes as standard with the system? I ask because I am part of the DVDinMotion group buy but since I do not have my car yet I cannot confirm whether I can even play DVDs. Lucie at DVDinMotion recommends I wait until I can verify if their workaround is even required.
Can any of you confirm either way? Thanks.

Yes - it plays DVD in countries which allow it.
No - you cannot play when moving (hence, DVDInMotion). But WHY? For US$391 (or less), you can get an iPad 2G 16GB and stuff multiple DVD's on it. $170 is NOT worth it for unlocking DVD in motion (USA, etc. - I thought Europe allows this anyhow?). |

From what I've been reading there's a bunch of stuff locked on the US system when in motion. I'm in the UK and can program the Nav on the move, read the first screen of emails I've received and pretty much do everything else except use BMW Online.
Never tried a DVD so not sure if that works in motion or not, I'd guess not.

For the record, I am interested to know if the system can play DVDs at all. I understand that video is not possible while the vehicle is moving, across the model range.

I am tempted to say yes as I would think the hardware is standard with or without the hifi option, but given your location there could be laws or restrictions. To put your mind at ease why not call the dealer or just go down and checkout a 5 on the lot. You should see "DVD" on the entertainment screen or bring one and pop it in.
BTW, I purchased this from them a week after delivery in late December and I think it is worth it. The cool factor alone is worth $150. At the time I did not even realize you could not program NAV on the go as you could in all my other BMW's, but this would have bugged me.

I wish it was as simple as stopping by the local dealer lot. I guess in Third World countries they expect you to rely on others experiences while ordering a car because that's what I did. My local dealer....the only one in the country....does not have vehicles in stock. All cars are ordered for each customer. I couldn't even test drive one.
As for the location thing, I don't know if that applies because my vehicle's specs do not mention any regional options except for "warm climate" ones. I'm assuming its the same as other Euro-spec ones. No local laws are actually followed, you see cars with in-dash and on-dash video displays playing all sorts of things all the time.

As far as I know the dvd playback is part of the professional nav system with te bigger screen. So if you don't have that you won't have DVD playback. I don't think the hifi prof system has anything to do with DVD.
