I agree about Italy but yet they have a history of making their fans sweat but still qualifying so expect their path to be bumpy...I think they could do well in the tournament if they get through.

I can't see Spain failing against Croatia.

Of course the biggest question of all is will Spain and Croatia draw 2 - 2? They would both go through and eliminate Italy.

The Italians have already broken cover and accused Spain and Croatia of scheming to draw the game 2 - 2 but I suppose they are just getting their retaliation in first...

Yes, but since that's a mistake from the assistant referee anyways. So the game continues. Then the 4th (5th) referee made another mistake for not calling a goal scored.

The baseline referee cannot decide not to call a goal scored because he "believes" the previous play was off-side. That's not his job. As long as the sideline assistant referee does not raise his flag. Game still on.

Given the length of game time after the "offside" was not called, I believe the assistant referee will not raise the flag regardless.

I'm just sticking to the fact!! Giving born in Hong Kong and ManUtd/England fan since early 90's, I can't be more happier that England advanced. Great discipline they played so far. (Side story, I still remember the great game England played Germany back in Euro 1996, even though they lost in penalty, and Southgate missed the last one)

But the fact of the matter of that particular issue was, assistant referee made the first mistake. Then the goal line referee made another mistake. Two wrongs don't make it right.

Well, kinda works this time though.

Maybe he does maybe he doesn't. I'd say first he wants the game called properly, to be decided by 22 players, and not referees with a lack of vision or courage. We all do.

As for Spain vs. France, that should be a good match up. Italy vs. England will be a good match up of two teams who have probably gotten as far as their most optimistic fans could have hoped, and now some of them will be rewarded with a semifinal slot.

I forgive if they're far away, but he was staring at it, perhaps the white socks and cleats do blend in.

Also, the offside is separate issue. First mistake doesn't make the second one sounds more legit.

Offside judgements get called wrongly all the time by officials since the inception of the sport... that's the nature of the game. A goal, however, is a goal. Even if they scored, Ukraine wouldn't have advanced BUT at least the game would've been more exciting!!

Just comes to show how much technology is needed for cases like these. Your pic clearly shows the additional official at the bottom watching the line and did not call anything although the ball was over. Thumbs down FIFA This game could have been a LOT more exciting!!

I remember England losing to Germany in the last world cup with England having a similar decision go against them early in the match, it ruined the whole game for England (in my biased opinion).

As you said, two wrongs don't make a right, but if the goal had been given it would have been the English fans complaining that the ref failed to give the offside.

Even if Ukraine had been given the goal we would finished top of the group and Ukraine would still have been eliminated.

Absolutely!

But what upsets those for pushing for goal line technology, was UEFA was experimenting the additional referee to spot, first time in major tournament. And still fail to accomplish.

Perhaps its another exhibit to proof that there's a need for such technology to be implemented.

Maybe also future technology embed in cleats to detect off-side? (since Adidas already put computer chips inside cleat boots). Maybe something can be done to the field and detect off-side.
