No you cant use the same alloys, so stick with one. Winter tyres are hard to find now so if you can get them with the new car that would be the best option.

Got my Pirelli 19" winter run flats for my 351M wheels fitted today. Haven't noticed any extra noise but the steering seems to feel lighter, however, that just could be me. It will now be interesting how many miles I get out of the back tyres before they burn out. The summer Dunlop's I've just taken off had done 21k, backs were burnt out and fronts still had 4mm on them, so I've put them in the garage and will put them back on at Easter.

I'm interested in getting some winter tyres this year for my 520d M-Sport. Living in Scotland it can get quite bad at times. I have the 19's 275/40/R19 & 245/35/R19.

I was wondering as I don't want to have to pay £1500 for the Pirelli's can I change the profile from say 40 to 45 and 35 to 45 as I seem to find more tyres with that profile for much cheaper the standard set up.

Are you planning to use the 19" both with summer and winter tyres, or use the 19" for winters only and get a new summer setup?

Have you thought about keeping the 19" and get some 17" or 18" wheels for the winter?

Thanks for your reply. I intend to keep the 19's on all year round. If I can get winter tyres for the 19's I may have to get 18's but I really don't fancy that.

Yip. I will keep the 19's on for both summer and winter, if I can get winter tyres at a good price. If not I might have to go to 18's in the winter and back to my 19's in the summer.

My concern is the tyres that you have to put on an off the wheels two times a year, but sure if they can be damaged. And it also depends on the cost of changing the tyres.

sorry for being a numpty but I am not sure why I would choose full winter tyres at around £1k instead of a winter sock for the very bad days - at around £70...

I have bought socks after I was trapped in Basingstoke for 8 hours 2 years ago. They are excellent but will shred pretty quickly if driven on dry tarmac. So I use them on snow and think they are great...

Am I missing something?

Winter/cold weather tyres are just that, best tyres for the colder winter temperatures.

I use them not just for snow, but icing is a major issue up here and it comes in hidden 'pockets'. Not always a warning, even by temperature. I was saved by the ability to have more braking control, when the car in front of me lost control. I had to brake mid corner on black ice. Not what anyone wants to do, particularly in an emergency. I was able to brake reasonably hard with 'almost' full control. I'd have been in the ditch and trees without winter rubber.

If you think I'm over the top, I came back two hours later and they had just cleared up a further accident, where someone had lost it completely and ended up in the trees.

For me, winter tyres are not just for snow. BMW, rear wheel drive and snow, don't mix anyway.

I am not sure if anyone is interested, but I have a set of 351M alloys, brand new last year at great cost, with Pirelli Sottozero run flats on, only used for 4 months, for sale.

For collection from Oxford area, at £1500 ovno??? It cost me that for the tyres alone, and the wheels were another £1800.

I am selling as I have just bought a 730d Msport and would like to fund some winter tyres for that!!!

My sottozero 19" run flats have now covered 27,000 miles and the backs still have 3 mm on them with 5+ mm on the front, so no problems running them all year round.

Ooops, wrong time of year to be down to 3mm with a winter tyre, so you need some new ones for the winter.... Need at least 4mm tread for winter tyres to do their job during winter months.

I know some folks run winters tyres out during the summer, once past their best winter use.

Pete totally agree, been waiting for the tyres to run down and have now just bought a set of 20" 356's. so no winter tyres for me this year, fingers crossed for no bad weather......

Reading this makes me think I need to get some this year then as opposed to leaving the car on the drive for 2 weeks. I have never been convinced they make they much of a difference but you lot are convincing me otherwise!
