Picked-up and returned two days later :(
Hey everyone,
I picked up my new F11 535d last tuesday (dec 02). It is a titansilver on 350M+wintertires, black/feinschliff/leather dash interior and I got 373M's for the summer on order. It also has all the cool toys on board too. After the order waiting period I was - like all the rest of us- really excited with it like a little boy far a new toy and after driving it home it truely exceeded all my expectations. Everything that bothered me in my e92 335d coupé was all better now. HOWEVER... Today, unfortunately the bmw "Joy" is already FAR FAR lost since I had to return it to the garage two days and/or 217km later, because suddenly smoke from the engine was coming up from the hood and filling up the cabin through the vents... First looks say it's 'probable' a fuel line problem (white-bluish smoke came from the engine, wet diesel line and the engine had a strong burned diesel smell.) I already thought I smelled exhaust fumes during or after a ride, but who thinks about a real problem on a brandnew car? To be Honest, at the time, I thought it was going to go up in flames :-s It could be a minor problem though, and I know my dealer is not at fault here... but I cannot start to explain what a dissapointment this is for me. I know it is a longshot, but has anyone else had a similar problem like this? best regards, koen |

Waaay off topic - but it that the full TFT instrument panel? If it is, please post more pics for those of us in North America who don't get this option.
btw, good luck with your new car. I'm sure BMW will make it right for you. |

I do not know about your engine, I hope it will not turn out to be something serious.
And I also love your instrument panel. But how come the odo reads 217 but trip is allready at 221 km? |

Mine had the same thing when I picked it up at BMW Welt. Trip had slightly more km than the odometer...

I guess that inspite of all the checks they do during assembly these days, now and then, something can still go wrong. I wouldn't over dramatize the situation. It's an overwhelming car you have there so don't let this triviality ruin the fun for you for the coming years...! I guess this car set you back sufficient euros so best try to enjoy it for its superior capabilities.
When you don't want the 535d anymore, I'am more than willing to exchange it for my 520d, it didn't have this weird phenomenon and it was entirely faultless until now (55tkms). |

I'm guessing -4.
LOL I wish we could get either diesels or wagons here. They are supposed to be coming soon. Hope BMW gets you straightened out.

@KoenG
The engines are still entirely handmounted so yes, i understand a human error is always possible. It just reminds me of the problems I had with my 320d touring that I had before the e92 335d Coupé. After picking that up from the dealer I had to return it at least 8 times during a period of several months because of a alarm problem (alarm went off not always but often exactly 13min after locking). Only near the end, other owners started to report also the same problem and they were able to localise the problem (that production week had several bad alarm units in all kinds of models). But at the time I was going crazy from one substitute car to another, and it being my first bmw, that was not cool. I just don't want this to go the same way... But you are right also, let's wait and see what they find monday, maybe next week it will run flawlessly again and if so... I'll probable keep it ;-) @Soft I'm not sure what exactly a webasto is or how to recognize it... ;-) If you are referring to the additional engine and interior heating option, then no, I don't have it I guess |

Well cautiously saying, I guess it's turning out just fine... you were right to keep it cool.
Apparently the fuel-return-tube came loose from the engine, probable wasn't 100% properly attached and because of the pressure on the tube it snapped. The returning fuel leaked on the motor underneath the cover in a dent and because of the engine temperature, it started to "boil/burn up/smoke" My dealer was very supporting. They fixed, checked, double-checked, steamcleaned the engine, cleaned the body again and presented it again on the delivery stand. Then when I got home this evening, I finaly had the occasion to show it to my lovely wife. I'll try to get the BMW Joy back soon, feeling the (for now) carefully hidden power underneath the pedal will bring it back real soon I'm sure... the sound and feel of the engine is in no way comparable with my old 335d. I will also post some camera-pictures and some thoughts in the upcoming days... Thanks for the support everyone! Koen |

Sounds very plausible, these things do happen. Pleased for you that the dealer did the full works.
Now enjoy! HighlandPete |

Thank God! I guess you're victim of the famous bathtub phenomenon. At the sart of a machine's life, the chance for failure is bigger since it's new, just like at the end of its life since it's worn.
The bimmer is composed of some trillion different peaces that all have to fit together perfectly. Even when their assembly processes are 99,999999% capable, once in a while they slip one and then this happens. Seen the complexity of the car, it's almost a miracle this doesn't happen more often actually. Anyway, there is no "memory" in this phenomenon. Many owners do think that there is causality at play and lose their faith in the vehicle. But it's just like playing on a lottery. It's not because you already won one, your chances for a next win decrease, neither because you never won one that your chances increase of winning one. Every event is independent. In short: this problem should indeed NOT compromise your thrust in the car in any possible way. Although chances are real that when a warning on your dash starts to signal, that you'll say: "I knew this car was crap back then at the start already!"... I'am a bit sad though, you won't consider swapping it for my 520d... it's perfectly fine! |

Well after 4250km now, there were no more problems. As they assured me, everything is perfect now and it drives incredibly.
I really love - the leather dashboard detail, - MFD with adaptive drive and HUD - New navi pro - lane change warning - voice control - cruise control stop & go AND controls back on the steering wheel I love less that - the cruise control back on the steering wheel has moved the volume buttons to the right of the steering wheel, I can't get used to it... - the top panels in the doors are not also covered with leather in the leather dashboard option (for a car in this price segment) - the HUD doesn't show the driving mode, the gear you are in or the RPM's (i think it does in the M5, no?) Can't wait to mount the 373M's when the weather gets better ... |
