What's The Difference?

I'm going to get rims and tires for my car and looking at the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. For the fronts I'm going to run 255/35/20s, but there is a Ferrari and a regular spec. For the rears I'd like to run 295/30/20s, but there is a BMW spec and a Mercedes spec.

What's the difference in these tires? The sizes are the same size and have the same speed ratings, but how much can the tires differ between specs?

I went through this last year. This thread should answer your questions.

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthre...t=ferrari+spec

In short sometimes are are differences between different car manufactures spec tires. In my case the ferrari one had a slightly different tread parttern and sidewall profile. Also the rear tires started out with 30% less tread!

You an go to the michelin website and look up each tire specs to see if anything is different. It won't be able to tell you if the sidewall profile is different though.

Alan, do you think the difference is the same for the 255/35/20 as it was for the 245/35/20 in the thread you linked to?

I see that the 255/35/20 Ferrari spec are named K2, not K1 as the 245/35/20.

Looking at the Michelin website the 255/35/20 Ferrari K2 and normal version there is a big difference between them in price, weight and most of all starting tread dept. The normal tire starts out at full 10/32nd tread while the Ferrari tire starts out at 7/32nd.

The K2 tire cost $118 more and it is also 1.1lbs lighter.

This was the exact difference i had with my rear 285/30/20 tires between the Ferrari spec and normal one. I ended up sending the Ferrari tire back to exchange for the normal version since i didn't want to start out with 30% less tread depth. I am assuming Ferrari specified a certain dept for optimum grip for their cars. Overkill for a F10.

And the cracy thing is that Michelin lists 3 different 255/35/20 PSS here in Europe.

I have these tyres and i'm still not sure witch ones i have. Not only is there a difference in thread depth, but also threadpattern. However you will not be dissapointed going for the PSS. When looking through the link it looks like mine Are the K1 Ferrari spec, but i have seen pictures av F10 M5 with same threadpattern so i'm not sure. I also have a star instead of the K1 symbol. Confusing!!

The star means BMW spec, M5 tires.

But I assume you only has the star on the rear tires, since the front tires on the M5 are 265/35/20 and not 255/35/20.

The front should have no marking or K2 mark.

So, is there a proper or best tire for my/our application? It sounds like the K1 and the K2 spec tires are out of the question.

Do the BMW or Mercedes Benz specs fit the rim better? I did notice that the MB spec'd tire on the Michelin site states that the 295 tire's tread is 10/32 deep as opposed to the BMW spec'd tire at 9/32 deep which is also 3/10 of a pound heavier.

I prefer the look where the tire tread edge sits even or a little past the edge of the rim - you know, to keep the rims from reaching out and rubbing themselves against the side of the curb. Right now the factory Michelin Primacy HP tires I have on the M-Sport wheels look almost like they are slightly too narrow - the tread edge seems to taper in a little from being even with the rim.

Yes, no marking on front tyres.
