2012 535i overheating
I have had some bizarre overheats the past couple weeks. I am driving along and my temp starts climbing to 250... then I get the overheat warnings and the reduced power. If I simply pull over and turn the car off for 10 seconds and then turn it back on the temp will drop to the normal 195 to 205 range in a minute. When it first happened, last week, it was 103 outside and I was in moving traffic 35 mph. I added about 1/3 gal of coolant and purged it. I have driven it a week without issue... then... Yesterday, I was driving 80 down the highway and it happened again. I pulled over, turned it off and turned on the heater...then about 1 minute, I turned it back on and it was at 235 and dropped to 200ish over the next couple minutes of driving. It seems like the cooling system just turns off for some weird reason and just needs a reset. Has anyone seen or heard of this before? Any ideas?

The same thing happened to me. Scan the car and you should have a water pump code. My fan would also keep going on high. You'll know when the car is about to give you the overheat light when the fan just stays on high.

Water pump or the ground bolt for the water pump, mine was broken and I was getting the same warnings.
