I hate to draw attention to this and kind of thread jack, but I think Americans need to be prepared for the fact that pretty well everything in your country, and especially stuff from Europe, will be getting more and more expensive due to the massive de-valuation of your dollar.
This 550i GT seems expensive to you, but the fact is that BMW has to price it that high in the States to maintain their economics. Back a few years ago when BMWs were cheaper in the US, the US : Euro ratio was 1.30 : 1. Now it is like 1.66 : 1 or something. I would draw attention to the fact that the new Mercedes E-Class released saw a $12K-$13K price drop compared to the previous generation. BMW will need to move their prices down market on the 5 series (and subsequently 5GT) to compete up North for sure. By the way, I actually really like this concept and my wife is expecting at this time I would love to have this perfectly balanced machine in my driveway (perfect ride quality, good handling, good power, good economy, and the most practical ride height). The space is very nice too, but if one assumes that the 3-series GT will be about the size of the new 5-series sedan in terms of interior space, then the 3GT could be the best bet of all as I don't think I REALLY need 7-series/5GT space. It looks like BMW is starting to integrate their european pricing strategy into the american market. Get used to paying an additional $30k for options when buying a 3er and easily $50k for a 5er/7er!

Having already been around a 550GT
You need to understand this car actually has more in common with a 7 series than it does 5. Frankly it should really be call a 750gt. They share basically the same wheelbase, & interior legroom. All basic options & equipment are generally the same. In actually viewing this car, it seems to me to be less expensive alternative to a 7 series. Also, although looks are of course subjective... this thing looks MUCH better in person, actually looks good. I didn't care much for initial photos either..

Right on!! This is getting ridiculous, the other day I saw a z435i which had a window sticker of $67,000...For that amount of money I would MUCH MUCH rather get a 911 and pay a little extra....

this car looks amazing in person, much better than in photos! it' a great mix between 7 series and x6, it can not have a low price!
"normal" version of 5 series will be cheaper for sure.... i can t understand the comments like "i'm moving to porsche"... 911 is in another class, can t be compared with 5 gt... bmw is making efforts to improve their entire range of models, so i don t understand the many negative comments: will appear very soon the new 5, the e92/93 facelifted models, X5 facelifted, a new generation of X3 build in US, a new generation of 1 series, a new generation of 6 series, new mini's coupe and roadster, contryman soon... the new 7 series (sensational 760Li), z4, x6 with fantastic 4,4l twin turbo v8, facelifted e90 3 series are allready great products!!!! |

then it should not be a 5 series. the GT simply doesn't fit in its own class in terms of pricing. i'm sure it's a great car; luxurious, nimble, comfortable and impeccably executed. but they should have called it a junior 7-series (750jr ??), not 5-series GT.

all of the sudden, benz is poor man's bmw now. It used to be other way around. The new E-class has slashed msrp by 5k whereas bmw has increased it by 10%. sweeet...sarcasticly that is. lol.
I don't see how anyone would pay this much for a 550gt. if it was a 528gt for 42k, then it would be worth it. i am gonna just sit back and watch. |

Well, I was thinking it would be a possibility but for that price?? Plus add the Canadian bonus fee. I'll take it for a drive and unless I am somehow amazed beyond imagine I will be quietly chuckling at whoever gets sucked into this overpriced sham. We haven't had the option explosion here in Canada that you have had in the US; we have a few comprehensive packages rather than the menu of pocket picking nonsense BMW has been turning to.
Anyway, that new F10 better be competitively priced here in Canada and be optioned up from the go, or I just may have bought my last BMW in the 335i. There are a lot more other cool options out there nowadays. |
