530D or 535D?

I'm about to order a F11.

Should i order a 530D or a 535D. How big a difference? Is it worth the extra money?

Can a 535D owner tell about he's experiences?

I can't find any videos out there of acceleration in a 535D.

I've run an E60 535d for four years, now on an F10 535d.

If you've only driven a 530d, then you would wonder why bother with a 535d; but once you've tried a 535d, you wouldn't want to go back.

The two things that really set the 535d are instantaneous throttle response - there is no lag whatsoever, it is sharper than even a 550i - and the ingear acceleration between 30 through to 70 - passing slow moving traffic becomes so easy.

The price difference isn't quite as large as it seems, as the 535d has the auto as standard.

Albeit south of my country, winters can be pretty cold in DK. Go for the new 530d xDrive where you get 258 hp and less fuel consumption than 530d. And, above all, whether you go for the 530 or 535 it is great to have awd to get as much as possible of all the torque down to the asphalt (not to mention snow/ice).

Quick reply to clarify: I have ordered a 530d Xdrive with loads of extras (and wow do they, BMW, charge you for that...!).

Tough to anwer that for you as I know that new-car taxes in Denmark make the cars horribly expensive! However, in Sweden the additional cost for the xDrive is SEK 26', but automatic comes standard with the x so if you're comparing to a manual 530d, the difference is bigger.
I could not order all the extras so I skipped HUD (did not like it during the test drive), Lane change (I'm not 85 years old yet) and the active cruise. The sports gear with paddles was a must though. So was panorama roof, M-pack, Comfort seats, 4 way climate control, large nav, best stereo, comfort seats and... what else.. 19'' wheels, automatic cargo door opener (have it today and love it!), USB, Bluetooth and a few more things. Hope to get it early April.

I think the extra cost of the 535d is worth it if you like the feel of a powerful car. I'm trading 'across' from a M5 btw. I had the 530d as a demo for a weekend and it was a great car, enough power for most people most of the time.

However the 535d takes it up a significant level, it goes from a nippy to a genuinely fast car. It will also put a big grin on your face and make your heart race a little faster everytime you floor the the gas pedal. If this sort of thing is important to you then the 535d is a must, if you find this sort of thing immature and unnecessary then the 530d is a fantastic car as well.

Good luck

Extra's vs bigger engine

Will yours be with the new Black Panel?

Theres a lot of posts saying that the F10/11 produced from week 9 2011 will have that. Pretty important i think!

Agree with the horrible prices here in DK, but its a car that my company pays.

Active Cruise is to expensive here.
Otherwise i'm on the aut trunk, sportsgear, M-suspension, Xenon, Heated steering wheel, Lane warning, ambient light, aut dim mirrors, Hud, nav, HIFI with Logic 7 and bluetooth.

Would have preferred Bang & Olufsen sound, but thats not an option, so...

Sophisto-grey i think, so only thing left to decide: 530D or 535D?

Thinking about cutting down some of the extras for the twin turbo 535D instead of the 530D engine. I think i will enjoy the more powerfull engine more than some of the extras.

I think you have thought it through well! Some things that I wouldn't choose, but that's the whole idea of extras; that you can put together what is best for you. I didn't pick the heated steering wheel as I have the built-in Webasto heater (with timer AND far range remote control!). Again: If xDrive was not an absolute must for me, I would easily have opted for the 535d. Good luck!

Aktalacken: did you get a larger discount on such an expensive vehicle? I get 10% on a 525D but i really like to have that 530xd now, especially with the low l/km figures.

Kave, nope. I got 10% off as well. Main reason is that the interest for the xDrive (now in the beginning) is stronger than the production quota that Sweden is provided so it is not a difficult car to sell at the moment.

So what was the price after discount? I have problems trying to convince myself the added monthly cost from xc70 to a 525d. The price difference is 100.000 sek and I guess you are way over 250.000 over a new xc70.
When adding the extremely good value on my three year old xc, it lost just 100.000 in three years I dont know yet.
Do you have any calculations on the difference in cost?

In brief: Its a company car (Förmånsbil) and when I look at the net-net effect (considering taxes, fuel consumption etc.) the difference is not that bad.
Send me a PM (is that possible here?) and I'll give you more details.

I think the 530d is best... compromise.
Price, fuel consumption, performance.
For 5-er, i think 530d is best value money can buy.

But if you want performance, why not 535d, or the best, M5

Aktalacken: Why the h*ll did you have to say here that you was going for a 530D Xdrive? Now I feel an urgent need of going for that as well. I was trying to convince myself I would make fine with a manual 520D

If you like to share calculations i have johan at hellstrom.be

Sports gearbox; Yes, I didn't think I'd use the paddles......but I do...and when you put the adaptive drive in sport the gear change is noticeably sharper.

Active cruise; I had the first generation on the E60, and I used it regularly on motorways, so it was an easy decision this time round. Now its got stop and go as well, then using it in heavy traffic on the motorway is even better...so for me definitely worth it.

HUD; that's more difficult to answer; on its own I would have to say its a marginal decision as its very much a toy, but when combined with speed limit warning and night vision, then yes, as these two options display information in the HUD.

I do have to admit that I'm a sucker for gadgets though.....

I have an F10 530d and, after my E60 530d, the engine provides more than sufficient power. I don't know how or when I would use the extra power of the 535d, but of course, if you can afford the extra power, why not? I bought my car off the floor with some very nice extras which I would not want to do without. Here in South Africa the 535d is FAR more expensive than both the 530d and the 535i. Some of you may find the figures interesting (bearing in mind that the South African Rand is (today) trading at R6.90 to the US dollar:

523i: R484 728
520d: R486 453
528i: R574 228
530d: R633 420
535i: R652 412
535d: R737 591
550i: R845 516.

While the prices are high, the standard specification is quite good. For example, 530d and up come standard with the Sports Auto, but not adaptive drive.

I don't think that the difference in price, at least in South Africa, would be worth it for an extra 40kw and 60nm. One would possibly also have to bear in mind the manner in which a diesel develops its power. I think one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between 540nm and 600nm of torque. And I hardly ever have the opportunity or a long enough stretch of road to rev my car to 4000 rpm, the point at which maximum power is developed. While the 535d has two turbos, I don't think that the 530d can be accused of lethargy. In fact, Fifth Gear expressed the view that the 530d was marginally more responsive than the 535i. (http://fwd.five.tv/cars/executive/bmw-5-series-2).

wow, its kinda expensive though in South Africa, but Malaysia is even worst. dollar to dollar we might be cheaper but if we convert to same currency we r twice the price. the ratio is like Malaysia to Singapore. 528i = RM409888 so it equals to R1,156,960.81. lol.

Have you tried Youtube? There's loads of videos of acceleration tests for 535d's:

I've had the HUD in my E60 for 4 years, and I wouldn't buy a car without it now. The ability to have your eyes on the road more often is a real bonus in heavy traffic. When I drive my wife's car I find it's a pain to have to keep looking down at the speedo or Nav guidance - but maybe I'm just getting lazy

I ordered the Lane Change Warning on my 535 because IMO the rear vision is a bit restricted (wide pillars, high boot, etc). Some ppl have said the LCW is no good because there is no audible warning, but the car I test drove had it and it seemed to work quite effectively to me.

If it is about budget, I would choose a 535d with sat and comfort seats over a 530d with all kinds of electronic gizmos. In the longrun these do not influence the driving and are what they are very expensive toys.

If the budget is free, get the diesel m version fully stocked!
