Ride Quality Review: 535GT Stock vs 528i 20" Wheels & Sport Springs
Many members are concerned about the ride quality of larger rims and sport springs. I owned the stock for a short period of time. A few days for the wheels and 2 months for the springs. Then I swapped to aftermarkets. I almost forgot how the stock ride quality is until I have a chance to drive a 535GT for a few days (don't ask me why, can't disclose). Here is the review:
528i Forgestar 20" 9J front 10.5J rear Yokohama Advan Sport tires 255/35/20 front 285/30/20 rear H&R sport springs 535GT 18" OEM rims 8J front and rear RFT 245/50/18 front and rear stock springs front, pneumatic suspension rear Road comfort: Comparing the two, the 528 is only a bit more harsh on road, over road hump, potholes, speed bumps & etc. May be around 10-15% more harsh I would say. Definitely more noisy for the low profile tires especially on slopes with scored road service. Not sure if the Advan is noisier than other competitive tires such as PS2, Pzero & etc. But my tire guy said they are about the same. I can still feel the road with the 535GT but not as well as the 528. Don't know why but the 535 stock's road feel is actually better than my 528 stock, not sure if is because the GT's wheel is one size bigger than the F10 or I only drove a few days for my 528 RFT therefore the tires had not broken-in. Cornering: The 535GT amazingly corners pretty well without too much body roll. I suspect is the rear pneumatic suspension. Body roll is just a touch more than my 528 with sport springs. 535GT feels quite tight on twisty road, I don't realize I am driving such a big car. However still not as well as my 528. Aesthetic: No need to say more. Conclusion: 20" wheels and sport springs is a touch harsher than the stock but won't ruin your ride comfort. Better performance on cornering, no more puking for your passengers (please note that review not only by me but also another passenger i.e. my wife ). Would I recommend the swap? Definitely yes. However, it's just personal preference at the end of the day. You make the call.

Thanks for the great review! I'm sure this helps a lot of people who are sitting on the fence about changing springs and tires.
If comfort only suffers marginally but I get a huge improvement in handling I'd go for it. Not to mention the fact that the car looks 10x better. Like what RC said, it's a matter of personal preference and what you value more. At the end of the day, I bought a BMW because I'll be driving the car. It's supposed to be the Ultimate Driving Machine right? |

The Advans are known to be noiser even amongst ultra performance tyres. PS2 and PZeros are quieter.
But good review

Very detail information!
Would you tell me that is there any different on the acceleration and fuel cosumsption after changed the 225R17" oem wheel to this 285R20" F14 wheel? I think the acceleration is less and the fuel cosumsption should be more , right? |

Sorry can't compare the difference. Only had the OEM for a few days. Didn't even last through the first tank of gas.

Thanks for the details RC3.
I'm planned to change KW3 coilover, went to the HK KW dealer, they said the module is not out yet. The light will turn on and the sport button cannot be used. So there are no F10 in HK installed KW3 just yet. They told me either to wait or get the KW spring instead. I knew that few of our forum members here in US installed the KW3, any of you know if their light is on and sport button cannot work anymore?? Thanks in advance.. |

Those southern Cal members don't have AD so no error code for them. The DDC is still function-able since it only affects the throttle and drive train. Quote:
Anyway mine is 14.xL/100km. 100% urban driving up hill down hill all the time. But this is almost the same for the few days that I was driving with my OEM 17".

Showed by on board display Mine is 12.2L/100 after some 9300km.(Urban 70%, Highway 30%). No bad! Considered a bulk car like this that is over 4,000 Lbs. Never reset those gauge since I picked up Jan/11. What a German precision as it matched my own calculation of fill up.

Thanks. Actually I like it to be lower for the look. May be i finger space between wheel gap (now just less than 2 fingers). But may be not practicable for driving in HK.

[QUOTE=RC3;9702641]I think you asked TW, right? Do you have Adaptive Drive? If not, you can change right away to KWV3 if you wish since your Driving Dynamic Control only affect the throttle and your drive train (your steering) but not your suspension. If you have AD like mlai then you probably don't want to change otherwise your electronic damper will not function (since you change the shocks). I don't have AD myself, was considering changing to KWV3. Eventually gave up for two reasons. 1 too expansive, $20k. 2 not sure if the KWV3 will be too harsh for HK roads. If you change please give us a review.
Those southern Cal members don't have AD so no error code for them. The DDC is still function-able since it only affects the throttle and drive train. Yes I asked TW, they didn't quote me tho. Have you asked them earlier for 20k included installation? My car do not have AD, only DDC. I have turned off the throttle from DDC, only using drive train. You sure drive train means steering, not suspension? If so, I might have a chance and no need to wait. Tried both Pss10 and KWV3 from other car, I like KW alot better and PSS is not even out yet. I think it's acceptable and wont be too harsh for HK roads, as you can adjust the stiffness and rebound to your driving preference. My car just hit 2500km, around 13.8/km, 50/50 highway and city. |

For cars without AD, there is no adjustable shocks and thus the DDC only tightens steering response if you select chasis only.

I will check with TW again and open the hood to see if there's any cable on top or bottom of the suspension. Just to be safe. Hope there are no cable found, so it's not electronic and I can change the v3 ASAP |

ICIC, FYI
One with electronic damper control EDC and one without. When I had my H&R, I checked my shocks, no EDC. I wish BMW will have it for me free.

Hope so bro, coz it seems like weird that no F10 in HK installed v3 yet, as told by TW. Will order it soon and few weeks should arrived. For anyone who want to get the spring for F10, I think KW spring is not bad and relatively cheap compared to other springs..

I think most people have mentality like me. Swap the springs first fro a few K. Let the stock shocks die in a couple of years. Then swap to other coilovers. By then there should be many brands to choose from. Though KW you could never go wrong with it, excellent brand.
