2014 550i Paint Chipping...What to do?

Hey everyone,
So I noticed the paint on my car is chipping. It's around the corner of the hood and it seems like it's going to get worse over the years. The car has less than 11k miles and is still under Factory Warranty. Do you think I can get this repaired under warranty? Any solutions to get this fixed?

Do you think it can be claimed under warranty for defective paint?

Didn't you just attempt a vinyl wrap on the hood and a few other places on the car. Regardless, take it in to the dealership, point at it, say "WTF" and nothing else. Answer all questions with wtf. Hopefully they will repaint the whole car, BMW would pay for it not the dealership so if they can get the work approved by BMW no dig in their pockets. Push to get the entire car painted, keep all documentation from intial inspection on.

i wouldn't let the dealership know you tried to wrap your car BTW! guarantee they will say it's because of that just to get out of repainting your car!

Paint the whole car for the sake of one panel? It would be great if they agreed but I can't see it happening personally.

You know, ask for a lot see what you get. "We ain't painting the whole car, maybe just the hood". Dealership feels like they won the negotiation.

Looks like the hood was painted before you bought your car. Did you purchase from a dealer? I had an issue with my E70 whereby the fender was painted, had to have the windscreen replaced and the engineer put tape down to protect the paintwork. When he lifted the tape the clear coat came off with the tape on the corner of the fender.

I thought the dealership might try and blame the windscreen replacement, as they always try and wriggle out of claims, so told them I was having the car washed and the clear coat came off with the pressure of the jet wash...

You need to go back to where you bought it from and get them to rectify, regardless of whether you applied vinyl and peeled it off the clear coat shouldn't come off with it!

It's not from the wrap because I removed the wrap and detailed the whole car and it wasn't like that before. I just scheduled an appointment with them for tomorrow and hopefully everything will work out fine.

Actually my car was involved in an accident. The fender was replaced and repainted but the hood was not touched. Do you think they sprayed the hood a little bit to blend the paint?

I worked in an automobile assembly plant years ago, most of the time in the paint department. I'm fairly certain your hood has been repainted somewhere. Could have been at the BMW Vehicle Processing Center. Nonetheless, you should get them to repaint the hood.

I'm a little paranoid to be honest. I think they send it to a BMW certified collision center to reprint. The only one on Georgia is terrible and has bad reviews. They repainted a bumper on a Honda and the paint mismatched!

They must have done, can't be any other explanation. The hood was probably not prepped properly and when you applied and then removed the vinyl it most likely weakened the bond, peeling off some time later...

I've seen used BMW cars at the local body shop having the hood repainted to cover up stone chips prior to sale

I guarantee this is exactly what happened. The adhesion of the blend work was weak and the removal of the wrap caused the issue. Nonetheless, you should go back to the shop that made the repair. A lot of them have lifetime warranties.

Probably the heat gun also when applying the vinyl had some play into it?

UPDATE: My BMW SA said since it was silver underneath, it wasn't BMW paint and that it was touched up. Also paint and tires are NOT covered under warranty. So I took it to the collision place and they took the blame 100%. They apologized and said that it was MOST likely due to the area not being sanded properly and that they will fix it.

Great news and glad to hear that they are standing behind their work. Now's the time to change car colors, maybe you can get a deal on a complete paint job instead of them fixing it for free. Just sayin.
