So the question was around economics and how much surplus the OP had to put towards a new car..or take the 50/50 route.

Hi Balster,

Lol, I did wonder if you were contemplating similar as we both bought at around the same time.

My last four cars, I've bought via the PCP route. I justify it to myself on the basis that, if I can achieve a good enough initial discount and finance rate, it's cheaper and more flexible than leasing. That said, some of the lease deals are very attractive at the moment. The S8 being one

If you've not seen it look here, as Audi may be heavily discounting them at present and artificially loading your trade in value

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...2#post19234352

I never trade my cars in as the trade in value, even if there's equity, is often far less than the cars true worth. For example I achieved nearly £3500 more selling privately than the trade in value on my last car. Both myself and the purchaser were got a good deal and were very happy.

Selling the cars on (especially well specc'd immaculately kept, low milage, fully warranted and service package included ones) has never been an issue, despite the issue of finance to be settled upon purchase.

The people I've sold to would rather these cars than sparse ex-company / lease cars dealers are often full of and are smart enough to exercise due diligence and ask relevant questions before even looking at the cars.

Finance companies are also set up for this, so long as the finance is settled of course! The process is realistically no different to what a dealer does when you trade in your car.

BMW finance's only perogarive when I called to notify them I was selling it and in need a settlement figure, was that I use them or their sister company for my next vehicle purchase.

The only downside is you may get the odd time waster. As was the case for me at the weekend, where I wasted couple of hours with someone who loved and very much wanted the car, albeit wanted to pay a deposit and take it in Apr when his current lease went back

That and receiving helpful guidance from the odd forum member

The other issue to keep in mind is that the card being used to make the final payment has to be in the name of the finance agreement holder. This caused a small issue when we bought privately. The plan was for us to pay off the outstanding finance to bmw directly and the remainer to the seller.

Sadly, that wasnt possible and delayed the purchase a little bit. As well as missing out on a massive slug of AMEX points.

I don't see any issue buying or selling privately. As pointed out upthread, the majority of dealer cars aren't brilliantly specced. Especially the 520d's

The S8 lease deals are certainly tempting but be really sure you actually want an S8 before you commit. It's a bit of a one trick pony: warp speed acceleration, but no feel to the steering, so-so ride and handling, and to me at least it doesn't feel any more luxurious inside than a nicely specced 5 series.

(I owned a few A8s, no regrets about switching to 535d)

Don't answer that! Can you imagine trying to decide on what to buy with everyone on here telling you what you must have?

Hi, yes, private sale, second person to view. No finance issues, all settled with vehicle clearance letter issued by BMW on day of purchase. (In case anyone's worried)

Only had to put up with one time wasting viewer and a few phone calls where people wanted to haggle on the phone.

Price wise, without revealing exact figures, I achieved just under £4000 more than my trade in / hand it back valuation with BMW, which in reality would have been BMW's flat trade value for the car. I have access to an employer based scheme and get a set discount per model, so trade in's aren't artifically loaded. A retail trade in valuation would have likely been much higher but off set against whatever true savings would be available for, let's say, a straight cash purchase

Great for me. Great for the buyer who also achieved a significant saving over a dealer purchase

Lol, in all honesty, I'm in new territory here. This is the first time I've sold my current car without having the next one lined up!

Prior to Xmas I was drooling over some of the 335d Touring deals I was seeing as it would fit the bill and be hilariously good fun.

Over the last couple of weeks though the wife and I have been feeling an SUV or 4x4 might be on the cards next, we've never had one, so might make a nice change.

RR Sport if you can stretch to one... I'm just starting to look at the new X1 for my wife. But £41k for such a small car is a whole lot of money, doesn't help that I can't resist ticking all the option boxes!!

Ok, I've come across a discounted lease deal through work, which seems pretty good.

Not what I searching for but it's got me interested.

335D M Sport Touring X-Drive. M-Sport Plus pack and heated seats as options. 12 month lease, 1 x £1000 11 x £365 inc Vat. 12000 mile.

Would be great fun and fill my needs, albeit for one year.

Comments welcome

Sounds good, there's some great deals on 3 Series at the moment. Something like £4K deposit contribution, unfortunately my wife won't have one so I'm having to pay through the nose for the X1!!

Funny that, my wife was not immediately impressed. She's warming though, I can tell

This car is specifically for her though, I'm keeping my F10. It's for my wife and girls so they have to love it not just like it

I was tempted by that offer but holding out for the new 5. That said, the 340i M Sport Touring is slowly drawing me in.

Now that would be fun! I was specifying up a fully optioned 330i M Sport in Tanzanite blue, it's a BMW Individual colour. Absolutely stunning, they had an M4 in the showroom in this colour and pictures just don't do it justice.

Tanzanite blue is fantastic. Would like to have specced it on my 5 series.

There are some quite good 2 year lease deals on the 330e, which seems to be a better implementation of hybrid tech than BMW have given us previously. Might carry you through nicely to a point where the new 5 series is available at sensible prices and the initial gremlins have been ironed out.....

I'm keeping my F10, getting rid of my wife's Mercesdes A200 CDi and replacing it with the F48 (new 1 Series). I still love the F10 and thought I would switch my wife into a car that can be utilised as a family vehicle. Gives me options to move into something more sporty/impractical when I come to change mine...

Going in this morning to get the deal done
