There is what I think is an factory plastic scoop behind the grille. I am trying to remove it so I can fit custom air scoops directly to the intake air duct, but can't figure out how to take this thing out. I removed all the screws at the top, but apparently it's connected somewhere else. I'm hoping I don't have to remove the front bumper.

Here's a photo from LACSTER

I looked at it as well, it doesn't seem to serve any real purpose other than maybe an additional layer of protection for the radiator.

Ah yeah maybe it does deflect crap from hitting the radiator at full velocity. The whole front bumper though, ugh.

Are you referring to the flaps that automatically close down if the engine is at the wright temp! and pushes air away from the engine bay to reduce fuel consumption.

Yeah, but mines static and not controlled by the ecu.

Yep, same here. They don't move, so they seem to serve little to no purpose other than to deflect debris from the rad.

It's impossible to remove that assembly with the bumper on-
The slits are just extra supports for the grille frame.

CUT them though, do not attempt to snap them off with your hands or with pliers etc+force. They are designed with slack/flex, so theres a chance something else will break before those do.

Don't ask. Just. Dont.

They seem pretty easy to just cut, a dremel would work well there

Haha that's what I'm saying. They don't serve a purpose or at least it doesn't seem like they do. It seems like it's the ghost of something that should be there. Like an electronically controlled version of it.

I was thinking of trimming the fins and not the entire square bracket leaving 2 square holes.

Don't judge me

Here's my homemade version of a scoop until I have a professional do it. And this is the reason I'm asking. So far no noticeable increase in power

are you trying to keep it open to force cold air in all the time?

It's always open its not mechanical. I'm trying to increase the static pressure for higher CFM. Truly the best approach is shortening the distance from the grille to the turbo inlet coming from the other side and not a scoop from the driver side.

These ram air scoops will give you no added HP at slow speeds, I had the RPI scoops on my old cars. I felt it only when I went to make a pass on the freeway, then I felt the power, which is exactly what RPI said would happen
