550xi LCI to M4, M5, or M6

Guys

BMW extended the Holiday Credit promo until tomorrow. I took delivery of a LOADED 2014 550xi back in November 2013. I love this car and so far my only complaint is the tires/wheels. Anyways, I think it's time for an upgrade but I'm deciding between the M4, M5, or M6.

The M4 is a newer car but It lacks many features that my current F10 has, and I'm very big on features.

M5 would be my first choice since I'm already in love with my F10.

M6 is just way to expensive but might be able to get a decent deal.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

M5 is going to be the most comfortable and still an obvious beast

I am not going to replace my car for another 12-16 months.
But I have already started to think about what I want next.
I may get an LCI M550d at a replacement for my current.
Other BMW options are pretty much like yours.
M4, but hesitant for the same reasons as you, and not sure I want a copè.
M5 LCI, this is probably what I'll end up with to be honest.
I8, this thing is just so cool, and not much more expensive than an M4 in my country, but then there is the coupè thing again.
M6, no, simply because of the back seat.

I'm also considering the LCI 650GC XI. I live in Westchester County in NY and it's no joke each time it snows up here. I'm not sure a RWD will do the job. Ironically it's snowing right this moment.

Based on those pics, I'd say having AWD is important. I think you'd have a difficult time in that weather w rwd M5. How often is weather that bad there? Unless your willing to garage an M5 during snowy months, I would say go for 650 GC Xdrive.

Weather can be pretty bad up here. I was just driving around and saw an M3 go sideways up a hill. It made me feel special having my 550

I guess I'll wait till March to order the 650GC then

The thing that scares me about the M5 is that you see SO many of them for sale with 4 to 5,000 miles. People don't love them. I'm not sure what it is but folks say they "like" it but not love it. I personally have driven the M3 with the dual clutch and while its underway its great, but its annoying at lights and in parking situations.

Ive heard it said the 550 is the better choice for a daily driver. a little less quick and flashy but smoother and more livable all around.

Yeah
There are 2 M5's in dealer lots around my house. Always asked myself who would get rid of those beasts...

I drove an E92 M3 last year and it was pretty fun to drive

I can't deny I love my car, as a daily driver and as a sport sedan...I'll keep enjoying it until i get the 6

I loved my M3 for the 3 years that I had it, but to be honest having that excess of speed that you can't use on 95% of the roads is looses its luster. Not that its any less awesome, but for me the handling was my M's best attribute.

Is a nicely optioned M5 worth 50K more than a 550? FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS more for essentially the same car, less smooth, more brutal? I don't think so. Hell, buy a new 550 AND a Boxter. I know the 550 doesn't have the exclusivity of the M5, and the Boxter isn't the storied 911, but you would have one of the best daily drivers in the business, and if you don't care one bit what about impressing others, the Porsche entry level car is simply brilliant on a curvy country road on a warm spring day.

To be honest I drive my 550 like I stole it lol
I drive 30 miles to work each way and I always find another driver to make the ride more fun.

I love the handling on my car but I know that if I had the appropriate Tires/Wheels combination it would just be the perfect car for every day driving

How expensive are BMW's up in Norway? I've seen other posts where people complain about how expensive vehicles are over there

Roughly 2-3 time that of in The US.
A basic M5 starts around usd225.000, 260.000 fully equipped.
M6 is around 20.000 more.

M4 starts at 150.000 and fully loaded 190.000

Here is what regular 5s cost, all prices in Usd with today's exchange rate.
550i starts at 160.000
535i starts at 107.000
528i starts at 80.000

M550d starts at 153.000 (xdrive standard)
535d starts at 110.000
530d starts at. 91.000
Most common Norwegian 5 is the 520d touring starting at 68.000usd.

Add 5000 for touring
Add 5000 for xdrive
And 25.000-30.000 if you checked all the boxes in the options list.

So yeah, it's quite a lot more than in the US.
However it is not directly comparable as average income is higher in Norway than in the US. I think it's about 65.000 at the moment, that is personal income, not household income.
I would say average household income in Norway is just over 100.000.

Hi Noggie,
I remember a period between 2005-2009 something, when working at a BMW dealership, it was quite usual we sold and exported cars from Sweden to Norway. But as i recall it was used cars, a year old or less.
Have they changed your tax rules so that its harder now since cars are half price in Sweden compared to Norway?

Oh and sorry for jacking your thread @BajandoDuro

The 550xi LCI has all great characteristics for NY area considering actual road and climate conditions. What can happen next? The M4 and M6 are very tight, M5 offers the same interior as the 550... however all of them have no automatic transmission and no xDrive. Just +100 whp RWD.

M-cars don't offer a winter program: with the first good snow you are a pedestrian. The forum member from Chicago who owns the most beautiful M6 ever http://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=936741 keeps anyway his 550xi for winter: http://www.6post.com/forums/showpost...0&postcount=39 Good to see people who can afford it

The most reasonable replacement to 550xi (or upgrade if you want) is IMO the 2015 650i xDrive GC. It will have all beauty and luxury of the 6-series but no issue with seats. Its N63TU can be easily tuned up to 500+ hp. The xDrive will keep it fast and safe all-season. Best choice.

Rules have not changed.
The import tax has actually been lowered a bit, there is still a lot of cars imported, but mostly the big engine cars, like the M cars or the big diesels.
I can imagine the exchange rate has changed and that has reduced the profit margin. It used to be about 40-60.000nok to save on importing a car, 6-10.000usd.
One thing that has changed is the warranty.
Buy a car from BMW Norway and you get 5 years.
Import one from any other country and you get the two year factory warranty.
So, if the profit margin is low, and the warranty is that much better, importing a car makes no sense anymore.

1. There's no point in going from an LCI 550 to an LCI 550d unless you just have money to burn and goes cross country a lot.

2. If you're going to blow $30-50k every 2 years in depreciation, then you might as well get the M6 and upgrade every 4?

3. If you're starting this thread now but won't upgrade for another 12-16 months, then it's pointless. In 16 months, we'll be looking at the next generation, G30, as an upgrade.

4. If you're worried about the snow, then why list any M cars at all unless you garage it during the winter. I used to live in Rochester which is probably as bad or worse than where you are. I would say it's a waste of money to garage it. That is unless you're filthy rich. But if you are filthy rich, then you wouldn't think twice about an M6. You'd buy the Ferrari.

Think you got me and OP mixed up.
He is making the swap soon, I am in 12-16 months.

550d is not available in OPs country.
I see no reason to winter store an M car, drove my e46 M3 for 6 winters with no problems.
Personally I'd get a Lamborghini before I'd get a Ferrari, but I already have a V12 in the garage so I don't need another impractical car.
