Dissapointing Tyre Wear

Some help please guys,

I was washing the 535 this afternoon and to my horror i found the rear tyres are at the min telltale marker after only 11,500 miles... These are the original Bridgestones but i was expecting a lot more than this. The tyres on my old 530 F10 lasted circa 24000 miles so this is really disappointing.

I have a new pair of Pirelli's which I bought for the F10 (front so same size as F11 rear) but I traded the car in before they were fitted. Whats the thoughts on fitting these to the rear of the F11? Are there any issues running with different make of tyres at the rear?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds a bit low, but then again it is putting a hell of a lot of grunt through those rears.

No issue at all with having a different 'brand' of tyre on front/back. As long as they are the same type all round (summer / winter, etc) and they match on the axle.

Thanks and yes I suppose 650nm is a lot of torque for the tyres to deal with.

I’ll fit the Pirelli’s and fit same to the front when they are done.

I have the Goodyear Excellence 19" RFTs on my 530d F11 and the rears have done 20000miles with 4mm remaining tread as of last Saturday. Your tyre wear does sound odd. What brand and size tyres are they?

Have yours worn evenly across the tread? If not, I'd advise a 4 wheel alignment.

I agree with mrashton. My 535 did comfortably more than double that mileage on its original Bridgestones.

I've done 25 thousand on my fronts and tons left - 10000 at least. 20000 on my rears. Maybe another few thousand left.
Very pleased with tyre wear and I do a good amount of city, not pure motorways, so I am on and off the brakes all the time.

These are 18” Bridgestone and I had similar mileage to you on my old 530. It looks fairly even but I may give the dealer a call and see what they say.

I certainly don’t have the appetite for replacing tyres every year!!

There is something wrong if you're having to replace every year. Either - unlikely - you drive like a maniac and screeching and slamming on all the time (and hence thrashing the tyres), or you have a tracking issue or you have a liking for driving at half the recommended tyre pressure.

Trust me Shiner, my days of doing doughnuts round Tesco's car park are long gone.. I drive normally with only the occasional burst of acceleration - as you do with a 535. Tyre pressures are also correct.

I do tow but thats only circa 1000 miles this year and i did three times that in my 530 and managed 22k from the rears.

Will feedback after I speak to the dealer.

Could be alignment. Toe settings at the limit can cause rapid wear and still look quite even across the rear tyres.

I know I'd have a job to get 20k from rear tyres, even in my low torque petrol. Road surfaces can impact wear, got a lot of granite chippings on some of my driving roads.

On E60 525d, I put 2 sets of Bridgestones at the rear and they would hardly last me more than 12k miles on average. I accepted it thinking it was the torque.

Switched to Michelin Primacy and did not have to change tyres again. Sold after 25k miles and still had plenty of tread.

My opinon, ditch Bridgestone get Michelin.

Cheers Pete, will get it checked out.

The roads around Aberdeen and the Shire are not great at the best of times but the AWPR work isn't helping. I am having to remove tar deposits on a weekly basis at the moment!

Yes lesson learned..

I will be replacing with a spare pair of Pirelli's for now but will look at Michelin's when these are done.

My Goodyear rears lasted 34,000 miles, possibly helped by not using them in the colder months? My Dunlop winter tyres lasted just under 20,000 miles. Unfortunately I got double rear punctures in the second set after 22,000 miles, so had to replace all 4 at once which was an expensive day (fronts lasted 56,000 miles which I also think is excellent).

The super soft rear Pirelli P Zeros on the Boxster only last 9-10,000 miles if that makes you feel better, but despite also being 19s, the proper N rated tyres are about £50 each less than the BMW Run Flats.

Update..

Dealer checked out the alignment etc and found nothing wrong, they said its not unusual to see 535 rears done at 13,000 miles.. The Service Advisor said her X3 rears were replaced at 13k, also Bridgstone!

However, during the inspection the mechanics spotted a coolant leak so they are checking this out over the weekend. Nothing leaking externally as i would have spotted that!

My 535d has just had its 15,000 mile service today, and my Bridgestone's still have 5 mm all round, so I should get more than 20,000 out of them I reckon.

In comparison, my 520d gave me 35,000 miles on the fronts, 38,000 on the rears, so that torque does obviously chew the tyres a little..

Yes I seem to be in a minority Piers so it can only be my driving or the state of our roads in the NE - hopefully the latter

The coolant leak turned out to be from the Turbo Intercooler. Hence no visible leak.

From a few different BMWs, going back to an E46 coupe, Bridgestones never have the life of Michelins. Only got 11k from Bridgestones, but 20k plus from Michelins.

Had 2 sets of Michelin Primacys on the back of my 535d and just changed again at 46k and gone with Goodyear Eagle F1s just to see if they wear as well as the Michelins did.

I always try to avoid Bridgestones as they never last as long.
