When deciding to buy year 1 where do you hang your hat?

Waiting for 2012 model year. I really think they need to remap the steering power assist amount and reduce it. The 2011 model year feels too light when steering around such a heavy car. Everything else is perfect.

I will wait for the Diesel engine. In Europe 65 percent of BMW’s sales are diesels. Low gas prices in US will not last forever in my opinion.

A BMW diesel engine is already certified in US, they just have to bring it over.
Although I care a lot for performance as well and I don't think that the 35d engine reduces any of it...

I had placed my order for s 535i ED in July, but decided to cancel and wait for the following:
1-M aero Package, hope to see it by November 2010, if so, I will do ED May 2011

2-Diesel engine, if not available for ED on May 2011, and no date is announced by then, I will get the 535i , but if date is announced and only a few months later and Diesel with M package available, I'll wait.

I bought my 1st E60 545i in 2004, no M aero package, my second E60 550i in 2008 with M aero package, If I bought the F10 right now, I will be sorry for the 3 year lease that I did not wait for the M aero package.

And BMW has been making diesels for generations. Considering how fiddly their electronics can be, let's just say I don't want to be the beta tester for a 1st generation hybrid system from BMW.
I care about performance as well, owned and loved the E39. Realistically though, in Los Angeles, there's a moratorium on speed, city's broke, more tickets, more speed traps, more redlight cameras. Not to mention the traffic; half the time you're just sitting there, like it's your couch. I want better fuel efficiency, but driving a Prius is too goofy for my taste. Diesel is the answer.

You know that US models wont offer factory M Tech Sport until later in its life line and their diesels wont show up until March 2011. You can always add the euro M Tech Aero parts when its out later in the year. So do your euro delivery now, enjoy it 4 years and then time for LCI factory M Tech like many have done for the E60.

I would normally advise waiting until year 2 of a new production, but my lease was up so I moved forward and ordered an F10 535 for June production and July delivery. Coming soon.
