550I exhaust flattened portion
Was thinking about getting a 1014 550i. I was looking at the exhaust and does anyone know why before the mufflers the exhaust pipes are flattened a bit. I looked at the M5 and it was not?
I copied a pic from internet to show what I mean... thank you |

It's true... its some bs about clearance... the m5 doesn't have it.... supposedly their airflow volume is still the same, I'm just not sure how. I had them removed when I installed my M5 mufflers.
There are other similar bends up further towards the engine... keep looking. |

I thought I read somewhere it was for noise reduction.

That is a bummer...seems like it would restrict flow and more towards the motor... I am very close to purchasing...I guess I know the first thing I am going to do...

There's no doubt that will cause restriction. I mean it's common sense.

I would tend to agree too, but the shop who did my exhaust work, who builds mandrel bent tig welded stuff says the total volume flow through is the same, however the bends force the airflow to slow down speed due to change in direction to accomodate the bends.
