Worse luck in history/Friday car
So, I purchased my F11 2010 in March '14.
Here's a list of the things that have gone wrong with it so far: 1. Engine fan; 2. Cam cover gasket: 3. Turbo under performing: broken turbo boost pressure sensor resulting in walnut blasting and de-coking. 4. Broken fuel return pipe and housing resulting in substantial fuel leak (me thinks clumsy technician buy no one is owning up); and 5. ...wait for it...timing chain replacement!!!!! Luckily all under AUC warranty. So, have asked BMW UK to extend warranty for further 12 months. That was a week ago. Apparently waiting for Service centre to confirm full details of works. Any views/similar experiences/advice? |

Cannot believe that you had those issues.
Do you have N47 engine or new one? Also what were the signs of timing chain issue?

When I had the car returned last week due to what I thought was a second fuel leak (turns out engine pads etc were so heavily soaked in diesel that it was still permeating through!!), it was only then that a canny technician noticed it. Hard to say performance wise as I put it down to turbo/pressure sensor. Mind you, when it was returned 'fixed', I didn't think the power was fully there. Moral of the story: get to know your car well and even if you can't hear any noticeable difference in the engine, if you 'feel' there is a problem, take it to the SC...especially if it's under warranty!!! |

I have N47 too and my worst fear is timing chain issue. You hear a lot that 2010 engines have this issue resolves but I have seen few 520d having timing chain replaced / engine rebuilt.

Incredible. Must have been built on a Friday afternoon just before a bank holiday weekend! Such worse luck indeed. All the best getting it sorted.

So: after piling up all my toys and launching them firmly out of my pram, BMW UK agreed to extend my warranty for a further 12 months FOC. Something of a battle though.

Being careful what I say here but in my old F11 520D (Dec 2010 build) I did 130k miles and not even a lightbulb failed. It was the most reliable and trustworthy car I have even owned. On that basis I bought another - the one in my sig. Let's hope my current one is as reliable!
