Transmission whine in reverse

Guys, new to the forum, but thought I'd post this in case anyone else has similar symptoms.

2011 550i ~40,000 miles. I got the car at 32,000 miles and since purchase it made a high pitched whine in reverse. To me it sounded like a ground in the audio system, and it was directly proportional to speed/throttle input in reverse. No noise in drive.

I had the car in the shop for misfires and injector replacements, and asked the service advisor to check it out. Turns out it is an undefined problem in the transmission, and BMW is replacing the 8 speed automatic under warranty ($10,800). The dealership couldn't repair it, so a replacement is being shipped from Germany.

Anyone else with this problem? It presented no driveability issues, other than a slightly annoying sound. I wouldn't have taken it to the dealer if the car wasn't having serious fuel system problems, but it appears it was worth the visit.

Love the forum, and enjoy the threads posted throughout.

Hi,

Nothing in reverse with my 2013 550xi that I've noticed, but I do get a fair amount of drivetrain whine in low gear at higher rpm when decelerating. I thought it had gotten better, but it's still there. For example, in Sport, or if manually shifted to 1st, 2nd, accelerate lightly to ~3500 rpm + then let off the gas. I will get it checked soon. Maybe new fluid, or a new tranny will fix it, lol.

I get the car back in a few days. They replaced the transmission under warranty, mine is also a 2011 550i with 40,000.

It might be worth your while to get them to check it out. A new transmission is pretty sweet, especially if they are paying for it.

Don't mean to jack your thread but I noticed you have BMS stage 1, have you had any problems with your dealer noticing the tune (error codes or otherwise)? Or do you have to clear codes before hand?

My two cents

Here's the thing, I assumed BMS caused specific codes, because using my laptop and BT cable it always has a code after removal that must be cleared.

The code is always related to the CIC, but it's error number can vary. What I figured out is the code appears to be related to the engine management plugs that are disconnected and reconnected, not so much a specific aftermarket tune is installed.

I took apart my air intake while working on building an intake for the N63, in the process I disconnected the HFAMM (air mass meter). After everything was reassembled I started the car and checked it for codes, and sure enough it had a code for CIC that was no longer active.

So disconnecting the connectors to install or remove the piggyback will cause a code to activate, reconnecting them will cause it to clear but remain visible. You can clear the code with many different OBDII cable/software offerings.

My guess is the dealership can tell exactly which connector was disturbed, but can't tell why.

Mine has a whine in reverse as well. Sounds like a remote control car. I assumed it was normal as well, but will be asking my service asvisor to look into it. Thanks for the heads up.

Got my car back. No new injectors (not idling poorly, and no misfires), but they hooked me up with a few trim pieces that were flaking off.

- new transmission
- new starter
- new start stop button
- new climate control buttons

Time to disassemble the intake again for measurements, then I'll order materials for the N63 intake project.

If you guys are having strange transmission noises it's worth getting it checked. At nearly $11,000 it's going to be a steep repair after the warranty is up.

Dear god thats scary. I also bought a used 2011 550i at about 30k miles about 5 weeks ago and haven't noticed this whine. Was yours CPOed?

Sidenote: I started to experience a pulling to the right especially at speed on the highway. Seems like this is a somewhat common issue amongst other 2011 owners. Have any of you experienced this? I'm bringing it in for service next week and hope to get to sorted.
