Unhappy Report on F10 by "Honest John.co.uk* : avoid 19" wheels

The website www.honestjohn.co.uk praises the virtues of the F10 but advise against using the 19" wheels, ...but why?...maybe the ride to bumpy?....well he does not elaborate

I enclose link below

apparently a car like this should maintain certain posture in terms of ride quality. bigger wheels automatically translate to harsh ride. almost without exceptions, unless they are only a little larger (say... 1") but substantially lighter than the replaced wheels.

I've commented on the difference in ride quality on different wheel sizes in other threads. I found the 18" wheels (Dunlop Sport Maxx RFT) let more road imperfections through to the car, (530d) than the other car (535i) with 19" Pirelli RFTs. The 19" were a slightly firmer ride, but the whole car was more composed, even on poor surfaces.

The 535i which had 19" wheels, was tried by the garage with a set of 20", which both a customer and the sales guy found made the ride awful. So the 19" set were put back on the car.

My dealer principal has the opinion, through his experience, the 19" give the better all round ride.

I still think there is more to this wheel issue and the varied comments coming back to us, than just the sizing. I'm still minded that the exact tyre make and spec will at least, be partly responsible for the opinion. Also the ambient temperature, when tests were conducted. Just it has been over the past 5-years or so, on other RFT shod BMWs.

More than the size of the rim, I suspect the RFT tires have more to do with the ride quality/handling. BMW should put a no-cost option to put regular tires (+spare) in place of the RFTs. While they claim the 2nd generation RFTs have improved vastly, I hear many e89 owners comment similar complaints even with the newer generation.

We've had this "which drives best" issue on 1, 3 & 5-series here in the UK. Michelin PS2 in 18" size is better than Bridgestone Potenza, etc., etc. Also we have had the which wheel size works best on different suspensions? Like an 18" can work better on a standard suspension, with 'this' RFT, than a 17" with 'that' RFT, because it doesn't get bouncy etc., etc.

I was hoping the current cars, F10/11 particularly, will be much better for selection, but I'm yet to be convinced. Early days really, but the signs are not too good from my point of view.

Exactly, we need more test drives. Best to hang on before ordering!

The car rides beatifully on all types of roads using the standard suspension and on 18-inch RFT. Claimed by three Dutch car tests.
