if I had a unit that big, I'd be hanging it out the window too.

that being said, my 100-400 can be seen out the window from time to time.

I do it almost every day.

I often add the 1.4x TC to hand hold 700mm. It's really the way to go. I only use the tripod these days when I stake out a nest or location for long minutes or even hours and can't hold the lens at-the-ready for long periods waiting on something to happen.

When I walk around or drive around, then lens is either in my right hand, or in the right seat where I can grab it in a second. This freedom from the tripod has opened up a lot more shots for me.

Thanks.

That lens is so fantastic that I still occasionally get a feeling like I'm "cheating" when I use it.

Once in a Super Moon7.1, 1/500th,200 ISO and 420mm.
I need a new body. The moon was low in the sky so there was a bit more distortion but at least no wind. Cropped from 3888 wide to 803 square.

We had haze and high, thin clouds last night. You could see the moon, but it was the brightest spot in a big glowing area. Pretty to look at, but tough to capture, especially with no long lens.

I too have a moon shot somewhere. The moon is reflecting so much light that shooting handheld is no problem because the shutter speed has be so damn high in order not to blow it out.

Those are great shots btw

Not quite as much lens as Kevin and Dave were running, but good practice for balancing exposure/sharpness/etc...

Nikon D5000, 70-300mm VRII @ 300, F5.6, 1/320s, ISO 200, -3.0EV, tripod and self-timer. I also tried shots F8 and F11, but the 5.6 ones seemed the best, which was bit bit counter-intuitive for me. Still quite happy with the lens...

The moon was amazing, that's for sure!

Cheers
D.

Nice moon shots. I took some, but nowhere as nice as yours.

I had two kind of shots. First with low ISO and slow SS; amazing details in the lights reflection on the clouds; very neat shot; but no details in the moon at all. Then I tried with a higher Iso and higher SS and I got sharp version; where you can see the details in the moon; but nothing else. All with remote release. I wanted both aspects of both shots in the same one. I tried to PS them, but it looks so fake lol.

I need a higher tripod. Mine is too low and my knees were killing me after an hour. This one would be perfect for a 5'3 and i'm 6'2 lol.

I will post shots later tonight. I took a lot of shots during the weekend but couldnt postprocess any since I wanted to work on my yard and interview instead. As a matter of fact, im in the train right now for almost 2h now and still 1h to go for that interview.

We had some major cuts in our department, so im kinds trying to get a job in another dept before they cut people off.

Cant wait for tonight tho. I played a lot with my extension tubes while opening the pool this weekend. So lots of bugs came out of there lol. I also had visits from two fascinating birds (3 in fact) , a woodpecker and two blue jays. All that with all the blooming in effect made sone very nice shots; especially with my 70-200. Definitely my best purchase since my first dslr.

It looks overexposed a little. Here's mine when I had the D5000

Gotta love it when someone on flickr asks if they can use one of my shots in a book "despite having no budget for images".

I had the same problem. My old Bogen tripod was just a few inches too short and I had to bend over and crane my neck around to see Live View. So I bought a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. With either of the heads I have it puts the 7D above my forehead, so now I can stand up straight and look directly into Live View (or the viewfinder), even if the camera is pointing up.

Anyone here got the skinny on CF card speed? Do the higher speed (90MB/s) cards make that much of a difference? Is the difference in writing or just in transferring images to the computer? I need to stock up on some CF cards before we start traveling this summer and Adorama has a sale going on this week. I'm just debating on whether or not to go with the 90MB/s cards or just go with the 60MB/s cards. I don't shoot video or high speed continuous stills, so I'm thinking I won't notice a marginally slower write speed.

60mb/s should be fine, even for video. That's what I'm using on the 5D3 and it seems to be fine. I'm not sure how the 12 fps on the 1D X will be affected by using a faster speed card or not though.

Yeah, I found a chart that lists the speed comparisons for various cards on various bodies. For the 7D a 20 second burst yields 66 images with the 90MB/s card and 62 with the 60MB/s card. Not a big enough difference to merit spending an extra $50 for the faster card.

Adorama has a One-Day-Sale every day this week for different SanDisk card types. I'll be waiting until the 60MB/s cards go on sale Wednesday.
