Thanks for pointing that out. My wife and I are spending a month overseas this summer and I'm thinking about leaving the laptop home and just loading up on CF cards instead.

Fun related question: How much did you pay for your first CF card? I remember mine was a 256MB for about $120 - and quite the bargain at the time. It seems the best deals are always somewhere in the $50-100 range, whatever the capacity.

My first CF card was for the 7D that I bought in Feb, so the prices haven't changed drastically.

I'm just debating on whether or not to go with the 90MB/s cards or just go with the 60MB/s cards. I don't shoot video or high speed continuous stills, so I'm thinking I won't notice a marginally slower write speed.
I made a whole bunch of tests lately with SD cards tho. I had some no name chinese 32gb class6 that I paid $20 each on ebay. I was experiencing heavy buffering issues when shooting over 130 shots on the same card. They were in fact 2gb cards mislabeled but thats another story.

I bought two sandisk extreme video at 30mbs and two sandisk ultra extreme at 95mbs and the only pro that I can give to the ultras are the buffer clearing speed when going in continuous mode.

Both gave similar results when tested with an external drive and a test tool.

For $230 for 2x32gb at 95mbs, thats a really good buy. But now I have a sh*t load of storage lol. Luckily for me the d800 takes both cf and sd.

If you are not shooting video or long sequence (7+) shots, dont spend your paycheck on memory. But if you can afford it, good storage can last a loooong time. And I find it useful not to have to take out the computer everynight on holidays. You just swap the card and voila!

Same here. And I had to buy two because my HP camera was making big files out of its 2mpix resolution lol. Paid $250 for both back in the days.

Just sold them on ebay recently. I got a dollar for both ahah.

it depends how you use them. if you are not shooting high fps or video, the 60MB/s are fine. my laptop HD is not that big, so I can fill it fast unless I start culling during the trip. cards are cheap. you don't want to run out. vacations are expensive. you only have one opporunity to get the shots. i always have 4 cards with me. you can buy a card transfer device like the epson p-7000 at B&H for about $700 i think. you transfer them all to it until you get home.

I have four of the 60MB/s and 4 of the 90MB/s, all 16GB. If I am shooting with the 1Div, 1Diii or 7D, i use the high speed cards. When I shoot with the 5Dii or give my kid a card for the 50D, it is a 60MB/s. I shoot a lot of bird shots and sports, so I want all the speed I can get, but I am running 10 fps in RAW.

No, but I lived in Germany for 6 years. Used to work for UPS in Nürnberg.

AND, I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so there.

"Beaucoup" used to be very commonly used, especially back in the 70's. I guess I'm showing my age.

We're in NYC for a week in early June, Anaheim for a week in late June (right across the street from Disney), and England for 10 days in September. Wifey will be attending conferences, so I'll have loads of time to wander and shoot pics.

She's a librarian, book collector, expert on historical fiction, editor of HNS Reviews (Historical Novel Society), and author of 2 reference books on historical fiction. The conferences are all book, library, and historical fiction related. The last is just a weekend in London, but we're stretching that one out to a full vacation.
