Oil Level

Just had a oil change done at the dealer, got home and noticed the iDrive saying there is too much oil in the engine.

So I took it back and dealer and they drained 0.5l from the tank and said all should be ok now.

But he then went on to say the oil level on the dip stick differs to that from the iDrive. Stating they had to fill it to half way between max and min on the dipstick for it to be correct in iDrive, and that they had filled it to the max mark on the dipstick originally.

Anyone else notice this?

Personnaly I think he was talking a load of crap. and think they either didn't let the car drain fully before filling it with the prescribed amount of oil or they didn't use the prescribed amount of oil to fill it.

I am with you on the load of crap, although I have no such experiences or evidence.

I've been told by several people that there is no dipstick on the engine. I've yet to look, though.

The original poster has a Diesel which do have a Dip Stick. All other regular Gas Engines do not. The fact that the levels do not match between the Dipstick and the Display sounds weird. One would think that these would be calibrated to read the same.

Man, I suck at being observant lately.

Petrol engined cars do not have a dipstick and being a self confessed obsessive, that's something I would be uncomfortable with.
I check the dipstick on my 535d at least once a week and, until recently, the screen display showed that the level was on the max, concurring with it being at the top notch on the dipstick - not bad for 12k miles without adding a drop!
A month or two ago the screen suddenly indicated that it was overfull, which turned out to be a faulty sump level transducer. It was replaced under warranty, but I will always place greater reliance on the dipstick.
One thing to note when checking the oil is that the car should be on a level surface - obvious, I know, but the BMW 6 cyl engines appear particularly prone to showing significant variations with the slightest slope.

Possessing the blind faith I have in Bavarian engineers, I have had no problems observing the digitial dipstick they have provided. I have had to fill some oil everynow and then and I do when it tells me to. I chalk that up as normal due to the sustained high speeds that I run the car.

I have a great deal of confidence in German engineering, but as proved in my case, the parts they produce are not totally infallible.
A note on oil burn - your car is a V8 petrol, mine is a straight 6 diesel. Oil consumption rates cannot be realistically compared.

Agreed, I had my HPFP replaced on my e60 535i and my 1st F10 550i was taken back by my dealer for an unfixable alignment issue.

Agreed as well. I have had to add a half a quart every 2500 miles / 4000 km's four times now, odometer is at 10k miles / 16k km's.
