Forget how good these cars are compared to a hire car.

I hired a Toyota Auris for several days last week in Iceland. This was a I believe a 1.3 litre petrol (3 cylinders I think?) and was an automatic.
Steering light and vague. Interior cheap and plasticky.
lots of rattles and creaks. Gutless.
Hifi, well more lowfi.

Not very impressed at all.

Got back to My F10 today and what a difference. I think sometimes we forget how good these Beemers are compared to a lot of other cars out there!

I had an LCI 320d Auto with Adaptive M Sport Suspension when we had a weeks holiday in Barcelona this summer and thought the same. Well, not quite the same as if I'd had an Auris (fortunately!), but it confirmed that the 5 is a lot more refined and comfortable than the 3 and as good as the 4 cylinder engine is, the 6 is well worth the extra.

I don't like hiring the more basic models as it would spoil the holiday a little. We had a new Mustang Convertible when we were in Florida for a couple of weeks earlier in,the year and that was great, but I'm not sure I'd like it as much in the UK.

I currently have a 2013 1.4 polo in poverty spec whilst my car is having a £2k repair (!) from going down a massive pothole and I can't wait to get my car back. The polo is just awful, it feels more like a 10 year old car than a 3 year old, I used to be quite a fan of VWs but this has really altered my view of them.

So true! I drive various commercial vehicles, forklifts and telehandlers daily at my construction company so the F10 always feels lovely at the end of the day...

To be fair an Auris is half the price of a 5 series.

However, I drove a Peugeot 208 for a week in Portugal and it was utter rubbish. I wouldn't have one as a gift. The F10 is indeed an exceptional car and it's going to be difficult to know what to get next.

I'm just starting to ponder this question in preparation to change my F10 in around a years time. I don't need a large saloon, or even a saloon for that matter, any longer so it's making the decision even harder.

For the first time in over 15 years I find myself at loss and looking away from the BMW stable... Initial thoughts are an F Type, yes I can't believe I'm considering a Jag but it's so beautiful and sounds great!

Moved from F10 to e90....

Miss the quiet cabin and the comfort which F10 had!

However handling of e90 is way better than F10 and mind you that I had eibach pro springs installed on F10.

Compared to other Japanese, french and italian daily cars, beamers are way ahead....

Respectfully guys, you can't even compare a BMW 5 series with those types of vehicle. Point taken though that it proves how nice the 5 really is....

I'm not comparing as such, a £49k car against a £16k car is no comparison at all, it does make me appreciate my car though. Saying that, my wife has a comparable age and price point fiesta and the ford is light years ahead of the courtesy polo I'm driving.

I went from an E91 to the F11, have to say haven't looked back.

My E91 was modified, but Adaptive Drive has helped the F11 to feel more nimble.

As to the typical hire car, agree they help me appreciate a decent 5-series.
