A 2 year hunt for wheels - finally fitted to my F11

So, I've had this car for almost exactly 2 years now and it came on the baby style 327 17" wheels with 225/55r17 tires.

I didn't want aftermarket wheels but wanted a set that was BMW oem with slightly more aggressive offsets than the stock F10/11 wheels. Also in my country spacers are illegal unless you get them certified which is just a whole heap of effort and cost that just isn't practical!

I found a set of E92 220m wheels which are 9.5" wide with a 23mm offset at the rear and trial fitted them, but the rears stuck out too much.

Then I found a set of E60 172m wheels which are 8.5" wide with a 18mm offset at the front, and that was too aggressive at the front!

I never wanted 20" or 21" wheels but was a bit worried that the 19" F01/02 9.5" 39mm offset wheels would be too sunken.
The 20" and 21" wheels for F01/02 are 10" wide with a 41mm offset, I found a set of style 311 in 21" which had 285/30r21 tires on them and they were too sunken for me. Maybe 295 wide tyres would look a bit better but again I didn't want 20" or 21" wheels and the 19x9.5" wheels only allow for up to 285mm tires.


That left me with only one option, E60/61 wheels. The 18" wheels are all 18x8" 20mm and 18x9" 32mm which I didn't really like as the 172m set I fitted to the car was a bit sunken in with 275mm rear tires and that is the max width you can run on a 18x9" wheel.

Now here is the tricky part, pre March 2004 front 19" wheels are 19x8" 20mm, they then changed the 19" wheels to 19x8.5" 18mm which sticks out a bit too far as I mentioned above. This doesn't line up with the LCI either which was in 2007, so it was just the first year of production or so that would work, and it wasn't that common for 19" wheels to be an option I think then either.

So just to summarise, I was on the hunt for E60 wheels which are 19x9.5" at the rear so I could run 285/35r19 tires and 19x8" 20mm so the fronts fit correctly.

The only options therefore are Style 101, 125 and 128. Both 125 and 128 were available with the 8.5" 18mm front for LCI cars so that was another thing to check. My wife doesn't like the look of the 101 wheels as they have too many spokes for her, while I don't really like the 125 wheels as I think they look aftermarket.

So that left Style 128 from the first year of E60/61 production.

I found a set for about US$250 and bought them immediately. While stock F10/11 sizes are 245/40r19 front and 275/35r19 rear I wanted 285/35r19 at the rear to make it fit perfectly as described above and also be closer in rolling height:

225/55r17 - 26.74"

245/45r18 - 26.68" 275/40r18 - 26.66"

245/40r19 - 26.72" 275/35r19 - 26.58" 285/35r19 - 26.85"


The tire options are quite limited unfortunately in these sizes. While I'm a big Michelin fan and run PS4S in winter and PSC2 in summer on the M6 the F11 is my wife's car and I wasn't so worried about limit grip but more aquaplaning resistance than anything else.

The only options available were:

Michelin PS4S
Falken Azenis FK510
Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3 K127
Laufenn Z Fit EQ LK03
Yokohama Advan Sport V105

The Falken, Hankook and Yokohama options were all 70-85% of the price of the PS4S and frankly at that price I'd just jump straight to the PS4S anyway.

The Laufeen is actually a Hankook Ventus S1 Evo K107 and the full set of tyres was only US$600, compared to US$1100-1400 that the others all were so I thought I'd give them a crack.

I've driven 200km on the tires so far, they are quiet and have plenty of grip in the dry and wet but they are a bit firm over cracks and joints in the road.

So here we go, the 2 year search has finally been successful and I'm stoked with how they look. I'm considering dropping the front around 20mm but otherwise it looks like how I wanted it to look. Note the car is a non-MSport so it sits a bit higher than a lot of F10/11 out there.

Love how they fit dude! Well done, enjoy! Question now, we were talking on my thread about my measurements, do you think the same offset and measurements will work on 20’s as well?

Yes apart from the weird optical side effect of having bigger wheels and shorter sidewalls means that 20" wheels will look smaller in the wheel arches - so even more of a reason to lower the car.

Also the 275/30r20 is even shorter than the 245/35r20 option than the 19" versions, so the 285 option is even more important in my view.
