Question Coins stuck in ashtray neat iDrive - Help

Hi, I don't smoke and use my ashtray near the gear lever for coins (parking meters etc.)

But last week one or more coins have popped over the edge and are interfering with the lid (does not open all the way). I can still get coins out, but the lid is not opening all the way... anyone solved this?

Cheers

You dont need a dealer, use a metal nail file to manipulate the coin until you can pick it up with tweezers.

They sell a coin box to replace the ashtray. It's a BMW part. Not sure if this would resolve the issue everyone seems to have.

It does. I have only had a problem once since I bought it and that was because I clearly overfilled it.

I got the coin box. It doesn't solve the problem. Actually, it seemed even more difficult to get the stuck coins out with the box in place.

Had the same problem coupe of times. Now I use the handle pocket that is on the driver's door. Don't take to dealer. Clear it yourself. It is not that hard, just takes couple of minutes and couple of tools. :-)

I used it for coins for the first few weeks and then found it almost impossible to dig them out of the side! So now, it's where I put the parking remote control! Works better but even that thing gets caught in the side sometimes. This ashtray compartment is pretty useless!

if your lid of the ashtray is half way opened about 45 degrees u can remove the top part by sliding the upper lid off so u can have enough room to push the lower lid more wider, and if u have enough space u can try taking out the ashtray with a little bit of force. After moving the ashtray i am sure u can see the coin , try using a thin long stick or whatever (if u are good at using chopsticks) to move the coins to the middle and picking it out. good luck

Slide cover off, remove ashtray tilt to 45 degree angle. Most important part - bang side of centre console with hand to move coins around (may need a few hard bangs at different places on centre side console)and you should be able to grip coins with tweezers or thin screwdriver and edge out. Let us know if you have success !

Use a long jaw-ed, bent nose pliers.

Works a treat. Just keep at it with plenty of light.

Oh, and I don't know why people have had issues with coins in the coin tray...I have had zero once I switched it.

Update, fixed, and prevention

Hi All, used tweezers at last (pro type with bent end).... 5x 20p coins had sneeked in.... jostles and cajoled them out the way so I could open lid enough to get tray out.....

And to prevent it ever happening again, have put a paper/plastic card in the tray so it sticks to lid at side and front, so no coins will ever make there way out again! Result, no mess, no fuss

I just bought a tray and dumped the ash tray. It gives you more room. I don't put coins in it, but I do put the remote in it now and then. The part number is 51-16-9-213-657.

Thanks, I had seen these before... a little more space, but the curve on the edge is the same, so would still let coins slide over the edge with a slight bump or car movement...

I have a had another thought... take the whole tray out... and I might then put a plastic guard over the lid mechanism.... simples .... and more space, and never a jam again!

Yes, but because it's flat, it doesn't force coins to ride up and get jammed. The coins lay flat and are ok.

Honestly, I have had this for over a year and have coins in there, and never have had a jam since. Don't overfill it. If you do, it'll get stuck. Pretty simple.

Thanks a lot, i removed the top part but didn’t know I can see the coins if I remove the tray. Did that after reading your post and I am able to take out 5 quarters, this fixed the issue. My coin holder will be the center console from now on.

Thanks to John as well for the idea of banging the console on the side.
