iDrive Screen Surface Scratched. Is BMW Kidding?

I took a VERY soft microfiber cloth to what I thought was a fingertip smudge yesterday, GENTLY rubbed and ended up with a HUGE SCUFF. I believe it actually removed the Anti-Glare surface !
WHY IS THERE NO protective surface over the iDrive screen as there was in past vehicles ??
What will this screen look like in 3 years ?

This is my 5th BMW with Nav or iDrive and I have NEVER had a scratched screen before.

And NO... I will not place protective film over the screen. This is something BMW needs to address NOW. This screen is WAY too fragile for normal use.

Hmm. Maybe a bad screen? Never had an issue myself. Perhaps bring in the car with the cloth you used...

The thing that disturbs me is that there are many posts about this online and they all say that it needs to be replaced and cannot be fixed.

OK... that's fine but what I'm saying is that there are MANY posts about this issue so I am NOT the only one.

there were couple other threads having the same bad experience with screen scratching ... identical result.

Some went on by putting protected film, like the one used on smartphone or tablet. But then it's too late for some ...

Some tried to address the issue with the dealer to no avail. Not a warranty item.

btw, i did exactly what you did ... but my scratch was at the bottom part of the screen .. hardly noticeable .. lucky for me.

So basically you are saying my situation is hopeless... but how about this: The scuff mark which I was trying to remove was not there until I sent the car in for Bodywork at a BMW "Certified Collision Center" and it was returned to me with overspray all over the wood trim on the inside of the cabin.

Not sure it's hopeless. You can bring the issue with your dealer and see what they can do. I remembered a blogger went as far as requesting the entire screen be replaced and the dealer rejected his request without hesitation since it's him that scratch the screen.

Even if your dealer agrees to do something, the question is what & how are they going to remove the scuff mark ? They could do more harm than good. Just my 2 cents.

This thread and others are very worrying. I am not even going to dry wipe my screen with a MF cloth anymore in fear of scratching it. Wtf?

Maybe I will vacuum it from 6 inches away...

The point is the THIS IS A VEHICLE MADE TO BE DRIVEN. The screen is bound to get dusty or grimy and SHOULD NOT BE SO FRAGILE !!

Not saying it is acceptable at all. As a matter of fact, it it is as delicate as people are suggesting, it should be replaced. It should be even tougher than a laptop screen due to exposure to the sun, etc. Up until now, I was going to use one of those moist screen wipes to wipe down the screen, and now I am hesitant. My car is 3 months old so haven't had a need yet.

Has anyone used one of those screen cleaning wipes on the F10 screen?

No seriously, I was going to use those wipes that are designed for screens. I have been using them for years on my Lenovo and Apple Powerbooks. Never have I had an issue.

Didn't say you were the only one did I ?

Just pointing out that just maybe you might have a dodgy one. Or maybe I've got the only perfect one that doesn't mark

NO, you didn't. But you are lucky at best. It's a known issue.

It may be a known issue but I would guess there are MANY more that HAVEN'T got the problem and will likely never let you know. I'd hazard a guess that you are unlucky rather than me being lucky - people generally don't post when they don't have an issue so the fact you can find MANY posts doesn't quantify the issue.

I've given you the info, you can choose to use it as you see fit and go see your dealer - have you actually spoken to them or are you just venting?

Either way don't get arsey with me about it, just trying to help

Look, if the scratch really caused almost $3000 in damage then get a quote and file a claim with your insurance company.

It's really no different than the same size scratch appearing on the outside vehicle costing $3000.

If you file enough claims the insurance companies will start complaining to BMW.

You will have to pay your deductible.
