Steering wheel on exit

Sorry if this has been discussed, but does the F10 (with power steering wheel) have a way to adjust upon ignition-on (entry) and ignition-off (exit)?

I swear it did - and my other cars do - but now I can't seem to find the option to do this...

Garage List
I assume you are talking about the steering wheel automatically moving up and out of the way when you turn off the car. My car does this, it appears to be standard on all 5-series in the U.S. Did you set your seating position into the memory? It's possible the steering when won't move on exit unless you program your setting into one of the memory slots.

[feeling like a complete dumba-s]

My question above was meant to be "can I turn this off?"

My other car (an Acura MDX) allows you to defeat it in the seat memory section. I can't find anything in the BMW except to automatically return to previous saved seat position (which, incidentally, I *don't* do [turned off] - but the BMW wheel still moves up and out upon exit).

ibimmer I believe you are correct.

Disclaimer: It has been a couple of weeks since I have driven my F10.

My seating position is stored in the memory slot 1 (wife is 2 even though she isn't allowed to drive it, jk) and of course my personal key. When I exit from driving the steering wheel moves up and I exit. The steering wheel remains in the up position even after I lock my doors. When I return to the car and unlock with key fob the steering wheel moves down to the stored preference.

So is there a way to defeat this? Prevent it from moving up-and-away ?

Ah, I misunderstood. Unless there is a backdoor I have not come across the ability to do so personally. I think the seat preference being stored to the key which is based on last location instigates the steering wheel and seat movement upon exit/entry.

Someone much smarter then me will probably have a precise explanation.

Technically, when you shut the car off by pushing the on/off button once, you can exit the vehicle without the steering wheel moving. The interior electronics will stay on for a short period but will all turn off if you lock the car once you're out IIRC.

Pushing the on/off twice will activate the steering wheel egress position.

Thank you everyone.

I thought I had defeated this (July 2010 build), and then after the software update, lost this capability.

Apparently I was dreaming...

we are now all dying to know....

why do you want to defeat this?

let me guess..

- during a bank heist, it's critical not to wait for the wheel to reposition.
- due to a hearing hypersensitivity, the high frequency whine of the electric motor causes seisures
- due to agoraphobia, it's scarry to get in behind the extra room of a retracted wheel
- ????

- you're self-conscious and you think the car is telling you you're too fat when it moves the wheel for you?

I think the OP wants the wheel position preserved as evidence of who may have driven the car last.

Instead of the sarcastic responses, my wife just doesn't like the wheel to move up and down each time she enters/exits. To her, it's irritating.

If BMW can allow you to disable the stupid sport transmission mode screen in the CIC and the fuel economy/EfficientDynamics meter (both in the latest software; my initial software did not have these), it would make sense that turning off the steering wheel entry/exit movement (as you can in every car ranging from the Cadillac STS to the Acura RL and MDX) is possible and reasonable.

When I drive the car I hear metal clunking in the rear and the front wheels maybe it’s the control arms in the back or something it’s strange I will take a look at it when I get the car inspected oil changed and get a replacement battery.
