I suggest that anyone who really wants to measure their true mpg, go for the brim to brim route.
Do not be surprised if the actual brim to brim figures are significantly lower than what is reported by the OBC. A difference of over 10% is not uncommon.

I have just over 8000km on my MSport 520d and the long ter average is (OBC) 45.4 mpg. I changed from a F30 330d where I got average almost 49 mpg, and I wasn't driving it like Miss Daisy. With the lesser power in the 520 I am less likely to engage in more aggressive overtaking etc so maybe it's not loosened up yet. Before the 330 I had two F10 520ds and was over 49 mpg long ter on both. Typical driving in all of above was a combination of city and A roads. I do a 25 mile trip a few times a week and if I get caught behind HGVs doing 50mph the trip computer records up to 60 mpg. On motorways I,m lucky to get low 40s mpg average.

Agree whole heatedly, I do think that mine must be reading quite high on the obc. There's no way I should be able to get 67mpg from a cold start. Will have to do a proper test.

Not impressed so far
Have just traded my E46 330d manual which averaged 41mpg over 14000 miles measured brim to brim. My new 2011 520D SE manual fitted with M-sport alloys has just averaged 45mpg on a 330mile motorway trip. Cruise set to 80mph in quiet traffic. On the same motorway run my 330D would return 47mpg.
Over a 300 mile mixed driving conditions my 520d has returned 35mpg where my 330D was never under 40mpg. I was expecting quite a bit more. |

Ive had an average of 48mpg on my 2011 520d with sports auto, and thats driving conservatively over 8000 miles. I do about 1,000 miles a week, in all situations city centre driving, motorway, country the lot.

16,000 LCi without sports auto, and it is 44mpg max, even with eco pro.

20,000 in two weeks? At 60 mph average that's 23.8 hours a day....
Piers - sports auto should make no difference. Biggest factors include tyre width and driving technique. |

See http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/520d
Not a definitive source but it does seem that 520d fuel economy on average is getting worse over time. |

With only 4 2014 cars reporting, and they range from 38 mpg to 47.5 mpg, the data is definitely too dodgy!
If you look at all F10/F11 520d's at spritmonitor, they have 202 cars with an mpg histogram like this: http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overvi...0d&powerunit=2 If you filter further, and look at 2010 to 2012 cars you get this: and 2013 to 2015 give this: you can see that the average is more or less exactly the same (42.66 and 42.18). |

It's worth pointing out, though, that spritmonitor is european, and many of the respondants are German. Who have a different speed profile to British drivers.
I always look at the upper part of the main bulge in the histogram. So in this case, 46 mpg would be about right for the average British driver. Of course, if you are on and off the brakes on the motorway, and like to use most of the performance every time you accelerate (BMW salesmen, are you listening?), then subtract a whole load - or just look at the bottom end of the histogram (36). |

Firstly, that the number of car is very small and therefore the average quoted is not very reliable. Secondly, new cars tend to consume more. It takes at leasts 10,000 miles to reach the optimum consumption. So, it is not surprising to find that the 2014 cars seem to consume more. |

The long term average over 3000 miles I have owned it, is 34.4mpg but again I'm sure it's a lot better. I have doubts about not saving a tad extra for the updated 2012 Eco-pro model with RTTI Pro-nav but I suppose that's probably £5k extra which I would never get back in fuel or make a huge difference travel wise on the same routes. |

58.8mpg out of my 2011 520D, 400 odd miles with 54mph average. The car has nearly 99k on the clock and it seems to get better and better as time goes by..

I need to check this out on my 530 too. It is incredibly economical for such a big car but bares little resemblance to the official figures that are acquired in fantasy-land.
