What do muffler tips do?

So I found some really nice M Logo Muffler tips for my 528i and thought it would look better than the OEM chrome ones. Does this make the exhaust sound better or anything?

it adds about 50 hp. You should get catless tips for extra flow...

Yours doesn't? I thought flamethrower comes standard with the exhaust tips
