Finally - M5 Competition Exhaust installed on my 550i

Finally - M5 Competition Exhaust installed on my 550i

Finally got this done.

First some pics

I kept the stock 550i resonators (as I thought they were the stock CATs) which i was mistaken on

either way my shop cut the m5 competition package exhaust right behind the resonators and then welded on flanges and clamped it all down. This way the exhaust can be removed as 2 seperate pieces (it made it easier for him to fit everything up) You can see that in the last pic.

As you can see the stock diffuser doesn't work well

i have an m5 diffuser on its way, which i will have painted gloss black (thats where i'm leaning right now)

When i change out the diffuser i may go to bigger tips (still looking to see what i can find)

all in all i'm extremely pleased with the results!!

and it sounds great inside the car (very slight with the valves closed), when cruising at 1500 rpm.

but when i open the valves (i have the exhaust meister installed as well)

IT sounds beastly!!

I highly recommend this upgrade!

Sound clip below, all pics and vids done with iphone, with that clip if you listen closely i rev it 3x valves closed/open/closed.

Clip was made when car was warm. I'll do another one with cold start.

Youtube Clip here.

Awesome! I gotta ask but what is an exhaust meister? also, you could use door edging on the diffuser where it's cut to make it look cleaner.

so the valves on my OEM exhaust open up after 3k rpm i believe, exhaust meister is a device that hooks into that device and lets you remotely open and close the 2nd set of valves

you can see them inside one of the pipes.

not sure if all bmw's have this but my stock exhaust and the new m5 comp exhaust have it.

I ordered the m5 diffuser so i'm not going to do anything with this one except throw it away once the m5 diffuser arrives and is painted gloss black

Be careful with the "new" exhaust law.

Basically, too loud an exhaust is a $1000 fine and is no longer just a fix-it ticket. One will also have to take the car to a state referee and have the car inspected for emissions compliance.

Wow thanks for the heads up. I can't imagine the M5 comp mufflers would make me fail that test since it would still be OEM equipment .

However , cops do whatever they want so you never know .

This is 1 of many reasons why I contemplating moving out of CA... and perhaps to Texas.

Thanks for posting
