Wastegate rattle and my SA's take on it.

So my car had a bit of a rattle on cold starts. Nothing too awful, but it annoyed me enough to swing by and ask. It sounded a lot like the wastegate rattle that's been documented for a while.

Turns out that's exactly what it is and it's the way all the turbo models seem to come (he started a couple for me and they all had it). There is, however, a software fix for this at the expense of adding turbo lag. He went so far as to say that some folks have come back to get it "undone" because the lag was far worse than the tiny rattle. I have a date with them tomorrow to replace a piece of weather stripping around my headlight that came torn from the factory, but I think I'm going to have them keep my software as is since it's not THAT big of a bother.

In any case figured I'd share this little bit of news that I learned and see if anyone had run into this before.

This is what happens when you buy the very first generation of a new model. I feel for ya, though. And in my opinion, as long as the rattle wasn't too bad, I'd simply deal with that as opposed to widening your turbolag.

Best of luck to ya!

Yeah, it goes away completely once the car warms up a bit. Or at least to the point that I can't hear it even if I try.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering what that sound was when I first started my car cold.
