M5 OEM vs Megan quad exhaust
Which exhaust should I install on my 535i to pair with an OEM m5 diffuser? Looking to improve sound a bit but don't want anything with major drone. Cost would be about the same for a used m5 OEM exhaust plus install cost compared to a used megan quad exhaust setup that I could clamp up on my own. What I gathered is below:
M5 OEM exhaust PROs: OEM look, adjustable flap to adjust sound, not much drone, improved sound CONs: cost more to modify fitment with pipes and hangers, tips aren't as aggressive since only 3" each Megan quads: PROs: aggressive 3.5" quad tips, made for the 535i so bolt up easily CONs: more drone, hangers may not line up tips to m5 diffuser |

I would definitely goes with the OEM M5 exhaust, is a full catback compare to just rear axles mufflers. Also, dealer won't void your factory warranty.
I had the M5 CP on my car, it sound awesome.

Is it a big difference for a 535i between the regular m5 and CP m5 exhaust in terms of sound? |

I'd go with the Megan just because of the 3.5" tips. Would look really good with that M5 diffuser!
Here's the M5 exhaust for comparison Last edited by lsturbointeg; 05-17-2015 at 11:58 PM.. |

You can always add larger tips to the M5 mufflers if you want. gtmassive75 just upgraded his to 4" tips.

Regular M5 muffler sound different from M5 CP. I believe the CP is harder to find and is a little bit more pricey than none CP model.
but if you want to save money, goes with the Megan, you also get the burn tips too. I was once wanted to do the megan for my 550, but found the M5 CP on the forum. The megan will save you money, plus is sound louder than the M5 muffler in my opinion. But get what you want, is your car.

4" tips with an aftermarket diffuser Looks sweet! As far as the Sounds I think it will sound completely different from the 550 and the 535.

Yea for sure I know the sound will be different between a 535 vs 550. And also the sound is different for a regular m5 vs CP m5 exhaust.
However what I'm trying to figure out is if the CP on a 535 is worth the extra cost compared to regular m5 exhaust and is the sound difference even noticeable between the 2 once installed on stock 535i. |

Yea the competition package (CP) has those black tips instead of the chrome ones and is known to produce a bit more aggressive sound.
Anyone know if the CP exhaust on a 535 sound produced is big difference compared to regular m5 exhaust? |

Yes, the CP will definitely sound different from NONE CP. It would make a difference on your 535 if you go full catback, if you're planing on using your old 535 exhaust pipe then it doesn't really matter which you're choosing. BC 535 pipe are 2.5" I think, compare to M5/CP 3" to 3.25" so yes, there's a big different in sound.

Ok. So if you're saying it doesn't matter between CP and non CP m5 exhausts if I go with the rear section mufflers only then I guess I'll just install the regular m5 exhausts to save some cost. I plan on keeping my stock 535i piping which I believe is 2.25" and have an adapter made to attach to the 3" piping of the m5 exhausts like other members on here have done. Hope the sound gained from them is worth the extra cash but I know the quad look will be worth it already.

Trying to still find a sound clip of a 535i with regular m5 exhausts installed with stock 535 piping and nothing else installed. Want to see what sound increase just the rear m5 muffler section only adds. Anyone have one?

Hi OP,
I am currently midway through the M5 Rear Conversion. I can personally guarantee the following from what I know and have learnt so far. 1. Nothing is plug and play in terms of exhaust piping and back boxes unless you are buying the complete Megan Racing setup. If you just buy the boxes you will 100% need these modified and welded including a repositioning of the exhaust hanger brackets. However if you buy the complete system from cat backwards then it should be bolt on (even then I personally doubt it, the 535 has flattened pipes underneath and the back box piping leads off in a completely different direction, this could possibly be different for you as I have a diesel and I believe you are running on petrol). 2. Personally I wouldn't spend my time on the M5 Back Boxes / Full System or CP setup. It will require a lot of work and a lot of money. Furthermore.. no your car will not sound anything like the 550i clipped above. The engine tune and performance is just too different to resonate the same sound. It's definitely nice to have everything OEM but the cost outweighs the benefits IMO. 3. The standard M5 exhaust tips are 3" according to my understanding. I ordered the 3" and after they arrived not only was I disappointed but I knew straight they were going back. The 3.5" are the ones and 4" IMO are ridiculously "Boy Racer" and kills the whole prestige of the car. I have a sample shot of the 4" on my car and all that came to mind was old school Ford RS Turbo.. definitely not the look I was going for. You are actually fortunate to be based in America (assuming you are based there) as Megan supply this all locally. My setup was imported to the UK and once all the taxes hit you up... you are looking at a bag of sand easily (1K GBP). I'll try and post some pictures later and of course once the rear end is complete. |

Is the M5 piping 3" from the cat to muffler ? And our 535's are 2.5 from the cat to muffler?
