Auto stop/start on 530d(euro) or 535d(NA)

I have a 2014 535xd in Canada. I'm not sure that the auto stop/start is working properly and wanted some other diesel owners to tell me what they experience. I've had a few loaner 3 series before with ASS and they always work fairly consistently, by that I mean it always starts working very soon after setting off and continues to work. In my 535xd, it seems to be very inconsistent. Some days it will kick in after abut 5 mins of driving, the next day with the same weather conditions, it takes more than 20 mins before it starts working. Some days it never seems to work. The strangest thing is, it will be working fine, then I will stop the car and shut it off for less than 2 mins (drop kids off at school for example), start the car up again and ASS doesn't kick in for the rest of my drive. This doesn't seem right. My service advisor just said the systems don't work so well and he will scan for any codes. Just curious if this is typical of ASS with diesel engines since my experience with ASS and gasoline engines has not been the same.

I have a 520D (EU) and it seemed to work fairly consistent... however I coded it to default-off.
There is no real saving in having it enabled and it just adds wearing to the starter etc.
Replacing a starter earlier than expected will cost alot more than ASS will ever save you in fuel...
