Slight vibrations at highway speeds

Just got my new 20" rims and tires mounted at dealership for my wife's 535i. Rims are 20x8.5" and 20x10". I got the hankook v12 tires in 245/35/20 and 285/30/20. Everything was driving fine and still is for most part. Now between 65-75mph I feel slight vibration on steering wheel and sometimes my seat. Dealership says drive on tires for few more days since maybe tires have flat spot on them from tire rack and will work itself out?I don't know if I believe this. Could it be due to something else? I know for sure rims aren't bent since bought them new. Is it the tire sizes that arent matched up correctly? Or maybe I will have to get it balanced again? Thanks!

You could get the tires road force balanced but the vibration you describe has also been noted by others. I believe there is something wrong in quite a few F10s with the suspension that is causing this. Mine has the same issue and I have my tires road forced balanced several times.

+1...does anyone know of a recall for this issue or could it have something to do with the fact the the/my car is lowered? Anyone having this issue?

To the people that this is affecting that has aftermarket wheels please do yourselves a favor and have your wheel measured to make sure it is actually hub centric.
Many wheel companies claim that they are but they are in fact not exact and will cause this issue no matter how many times you get the wheels rebalanced.

Been there done that 4 different sets of wheels on 2 different cars before i found this out. Was always wondering why the hell cant i get rid of this vibration but got hubcentric rings for the wheels that were supposed to be hub centric and guess what now the car is as smooth as glass.

Can you explain hubcentric rings?

Here is a link to some info for you. Basically what it does is make the center bore of the rim match the hub diam.

My wheels have the same hub bore as stock. 72.56mm if I remember correctly. That is not the problem. Also my car isn't lowered.

I met a guy at a local car wash and he was having never ending vibration issues with his new vossen wheels too. If its not a hub centric or balancing issue it's the wheels.

Do you yourself a favor and have the center of the wheel measured and see what the difference is between your hub 72.56mm and the rim measurement. Then get some hub centric rings and your car will ride as smooth as stock.

I couldnt beleive that it took me 4 sets of wheels and 2 cars to finally figure out what the hell was going on. Wish i could get all the money back for the wheel balancing that i had done which didnt have anything to do with the vibrations at all.

My new wheels are made for the f10 and the wheel company said its custom so should not need hub rings. My car is also not lowered yet. Didn't notice any vibrations with the stock sport 19" rims and Michelin run flats. I will try get them balanced again and will double check to make sure I don't need hub rings. Could it be due to the use of OEM lug bolts?

Thats what i was told on 4 seperate occasions. "Yes the wheels are hub centric" Well they werent and even .5mm of a difference will have your steering wheel shaking. I couldnt believe it either.

OEM lug bolts have nothing to do with it and iam 99.9% sure that your wheels are in fact not hub centric even though they are supposed to be and that is why you had your wheels balanced twice and still have vibration issues. You can try that route again and you will end up with the same results.

Just trying to help because i went through this same thing since 2008 and spent alot of money on Road Force balances and different wheels which all ended up doing the same exact thing. Now that i know the real reason and got hub centric rings for wheels that werent supposed to need them all my vibration issues are a thing of the past and the car is super smooth no matter what.

So 72.56mm is stock? If my rims do require it, where do you recommend buying them from? Metal or plastic ones? Thanks!

I bought mine from justforwheels.com. They are made out of metal and offer alot of different sizing options so you can find one that will work for you.

72.56 is the size of the hub on my M3

This is interesting. I have the vibration issue on my F10 with the 19" 351M rims, tires and rims have been matched and balanced twice and the vibrations were gone for a while but seem to have reappeared. Would putting hub centric rings solve the problem even with OEM rims? Thanks in advance!

OEM rims are hubcentric so you should not need rings. either your wheel weights flew off or you could potentially have a bent rim causing the vibrations.

Well, after having Discount Tires Road Force balance my wheels several times, I decided to give another shop a chance to see if a good balance would help. I read about a shop called Motorwerks on the Southwest Freeway. They also have a Hunter Road Force machine. Motorwerks also has a Corghi Touchless Tire Mounter. I am happy to report that my vibration issue is much better. The balance was very reasonable at $40 too. For those in Houston looking for a good place to take their vehicle for a proper balance, give Motorwerks a shot. They all work on Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, etc. They actually had a Ferrari and Lamborghini on the showroom floor to admire while waiting on my car.

Do you have aftermarket wheels on your car?

The reason i ask is i noticed that you say your vibration issue is much better. I assume that means that it is not totally gone.

I have Avant Garde wheels which are aftermarket. They do have the stock hub bores at 72.56mm. Yes the vibration is all but gone, almost perfect. I only drove it for about 15 miles on the highway after the rebalance and need a little more time to positively note any problems.

If your vibration starts to worsen or change the mph range that it is happening it is because the wheel is moving around on the hub ever so slightly from braking and cornering.

If you havent physically checked your wheels hub bore i would recommend doing so at that point. Easiest way is to take your lug bolts out and put the wheel on the hub and try to move it around and see if it moves.

It doesnt take much of a difference to cause all of this. I ended up going with a 73.1mm ring which is just about .5mm and that has made a car go from slight vibrations to super smooth just like the stock wheels.
