Side airbags in the backseat

In all my previous BMWs there was always an option to include side airbags for backseat passengers. For F10 there is no such option...

I assumed that they where standard now days. But when I checked it is not included and there is no option of selecting it.

Whats the deal here?

Probably BMW didn't get many orders on these for the E60. They're trying to sell more sexy safety features like the lane change warning etc. It's really sad. I don't even think that the back seat in the F10 is equiped with seat belt strechers and relaxers which is extremely important for older children who are not using a child seat or cushion anymore.

There have been accidents where people in the front have survived severe frontal impacts but the passengers in the back have died without much visible injuries. I'm not talking specifically about BMW now.

As far as I know, MB, Audi and Lexus all have rear side airbags and proper rear seat belts. Either as standard or as an option.

I think the F10 has a side curtain airbag that replaces much of the functionality.

Yes, the F10 have side curtains going all the way to the back seat, just as the E60 had. But curtains are for head and neck protection and side airbags protects the torso and the pelvis.

Rear side airbags are potentially dangerous if they come in contact with small children seated in the rear. My guess is that this issue led BMW to drop the option. I purchased the option on my 2008 535xi only to discover much later on that, while the factory would install the option, BMW would not activate the bags before delivery. The dealerships were responsible for activation - upon customer request and, in my case, only after I signed a document advising me of the dangers the bags presented to small children and that I still wanted them activated, regardless. (We no longer had small kids and it wasn't an issue for me.)

Looking at this image (from Euroncap) I don't see any airbags part from the head curtain...

This article has some decent pics of a crashed f10...

I read a research report about side airbags and children. The conclusion was that it's better for the child to be hit by the airbag than the door.

Interesting....your research comment runs contrary to what I've seen and read, especially for very young children/infants. But, i have not looked into this recently (past 3-4 years, since i purchased my 2008 BMW 535 xi w/rear airbag option). If you saw something online, please provide the link.

My daughter had her first baby 6 months ago and, in her birthing class, they warned about rear side airbags Plus, my 2008 BMW had bold red stickers on the inside door panel (only visible when door was open...near the lock) that said something like "this car is equipped with rear side airbags which may pose a danger to small children."

That is no side airbag. It is the head curtain.

There are different cultures around car and child safety in different countries. The report I was referring to was sponsored by one of Sweden's major insurance companies that are well known for their research on actual crashes.

In Sweden, the general advice by authorities and insurance companies is that children should be seated facing backwards until they become at leat 4 years old. And you can find child seats that makes this possible here. It's a totally different situation in the rest of Europe and I would imagine in the US too. I wouldn't say that everyone else is wrong but I can see the logic in being faced backwards when the crash happens.
