Bad Starter???

Hello All,
All of a sudden, my car refuses to start. I hear a loud click and that's it. I'm guessing the starter needs to be replaced, but what else could it possibly be? Any thought would be appreciated. Thank you.

How old is the car's battery? And if this is for the 2005 545i listed under your name...you may want to ask over on the e60 5 series forum...they may be more familiar with issues going on with your car since a 05 545i is an e60 chassis.

Sorry i forgot to mention, this is a 2015 550i with about 48k miles on it. Battery appears to be fully charged. It did this same thing last week, but it started the next day.

Yup likely. I wonder if there are codes. Surprised your starter is going out so soon.

Yeah, I got these codes below, i'm guessing those would be the ones that relate to this issue.

Fault code: 930730
1) Check line or plug connection between CAS and solenoid switch.
2) Resistance measurement at Car Access System output to GND.
3) Check starter motor
4) If OK, renew the CAS (starter motor relay faulty).

If you hear a loud click, most likely the starter is bad. Sometime you can still start if you get something and tap the starter while Simone starts the car.

Did it end up being your starter? Having a similar issue on F07.

To those that have had starter trouble, do you regularly use the start stop? Curious about correlation.

I believe there is one. My neighbor was a mechanic for the USPS and he said they replaced starters quite often on the mail delivery trucks. Even though they don't have automatic stop/start, they physically stop and start the trucks very, very often. I asked him if he thought the auto s/s would wear out the starter early and, in his experienced mechanic (he even owned a shop until his partner ran it into the ground) opinion he said most assuredly. Since then I haven't used the s/s at all.

Hi Qsilver7, are you (or anyone else) able to expand on any of these suggestions? My 2011 528i very occasionally won't start. Maybe once a month, and seems to mostly happen with lots of stop & start errands around town. Won't start (whirring like a bad battery) and get the central message. We wait between five minutes and a half hour, and it starts and runs fine. Did battery/starter/alternator check with a dedicated Foxwell tool, and everything is fine. I don't have ISTA, but have another Foxwell 530 that says I have a 930730 stored code.

So I see your suggestions above, but I might as well be trying to decipher cuneiform alphabet. I guess I follow/understand just enough to get myself in trouble!

So follow up questions based on your suggesstions:
1) Just wiggle the plugs at the CAS module under the steering column? These are directions I found: https://www.rpmmotorsport.net/pages/...l-instructions
2) I have a multimeter, but don't know which wires/terminals to check there?
3) How do I check the starter beyond the Foxwell tool check function. Is there another way to check?
4) Renew CAS means buy a new one or send it in to get repaired? Or is this some ISTA coding process? Where is the relay located, and can those just be swapped out?

THANKS for any help. I don't want to just start throwing parts at it, and don't have anyone competent to take it to for diagnosis.
