I posted this on the tech side by figure I'll get more hits here too. Went to install my BMS intake & came across this valve wth a extra filter covering it. It seems sensitive to have extra filters so I left the install till I get answers

I just make that YouTube video looking under this valve & box

Got my answers - it's a bypass valve in case main air source is blocked by water or Debris the engine would have some kinda of oxygen. Same design as Cold air intake bypass's

Example:

Just now seeing this, the valve isn't big enough to supply the engine with air needed to run. The spring loaded valve would however be able to break the vacuum drawing large volumes of water into a submerged intake giving you a marginally better chance of not ending up with a hydrolocked engine.

Ever try to use a cracked straw to take a drink before?

I'll have to check my car for this - since it's still under full maintenance plan I'm not inspecting everything constantly.

FWIW - IMO the air through that valve will "run" the engine just fine, but nowhere near full output, which you wouldn't (and shouldn't) be using in a deep water scenario anyways. I'm happy to see it there myself...

BMW factory intakes (possibly Germans in general) seem to have been very effective and efficient for decades now. "Cold air intakes" may sound better (to some) but probably won't make any more power or draw in any colder air in real world conditions and close-to-stock levels of tune.

I wish BMW would offer some more options for those who might want more sound. I'm thinking of Porsche's "motor sound package" from the 993 - just perfect IMO. No drone, no amateurish bassy exhaust, no buzzing - lots of bark, snarl and the sound of power. To my knowledge it was a combination of airbox and exhaust changes.

So I did install the BMS intake, no problems at all & no Lights.

With the hood open the sound is massive but when it's closed you can hardly hear it. It's just for cool points I guess
