Air Leak
Going home last night on the Highway, 45 degrees F, with the Sunroof in the vent position..................reminded me of how bad the Air leak is coming in from the Door Pull Handle.
Now that there are more F10's on the road, could I ask for you all to see if you have this same condition? It has to be on the Highway, with the sunroof vented, and on a cool or cold day. You should feel cold air coming in where the Pull Handle is. I thought this might be an anomolly on my door, but the passenger one does it as well. You will only feel at a fast speed, obvisouly due to the dynamics of the Sunroof being vented and creating a vacuum on the interior of the car. The agrivating thing is that your leg or hand start to get cold real quick with this flaw...............something that my prior BMW's never exhibited. Probably an easy fix, maybe some foam under the handle. Just want to see if this is a design flaw which I suspect, that is affecting most of us. |

I have this issue as well. After start complaining about it since the delivery of my car, my dealer have checked the seals of the front doors, however this didn''t solved the problem and I was told no technical solution was available.
After discussing this with BMW Netherlands, because I was quite angry about this, I was simply told that this airflow was just a feature of my 5 serie. However last week my dealer called me that BMW AG had provided a solution for this issue by replacing the door foam. |

not noticed this but then i've not driven at speed with the sunroof in the vented position. wonder if it affects the F11 as well with the panoramic roof. will try it one day.
if you get a fix / modified part/foam can you post the BMW PUMA case that references it so that other owners can quote that as well? |

Its the same on F11. Just open the back window one centimeter and the problem is solved. The air has to enter somewhere (Bernoulli-effect) when it escapes out the sunroof.

What I am trying to find out is if this is a design overlook on all F10's / F11's as I now suspect it could be. This condition will only be seen at highway speed (normal town driving is not fast enough to pull the vacuum) and on cold days when you can really feel the cold air coming in.
I too would like to know what the "Official" fix is from BMW, and would hope that this can be fixed with an extra piece of foam placed under the door handle surround, not requiring the full door panel to be taken off. We should not be required to crack other windows open to solve the problem. It should not leak period, there is a flap mechanism hidden under the back end of the car, under the bumper that should provide enough makeup air. As with the other issues we have seen, I have written an e-mail to BMW explaining the anomoly. I will also talk to the dealer to see what they can look up. Thanks for your input. |

Yes, would be great if there's a fix. Never had this problem with other cars. My 9 year old daughter commented this today too "why is cold air coming from this door handle dad??"

Guess I'll need to test this in my car. To be honest I only ordered the panoramic roof to let light in when my 8 month old is in the back when im in car alone i keep thr sliding shade closed. I never really use the tilt or slide function. Cars done 3500 miles now and I've only opened/titled the glass section once and that was just curiosity to see if it worked. Still interested in hearing about any official BMW AG fix though as I can get dealer to sort it when I get round to getting car recoded for that DAB fix that seems to be available now.

Tested this yesterday and indeed, much air infiltration when the sunroof is in tilt mode. However, I almost never use tilt function so I don't think I'm going to have them tear apart my door panel in order to fix.

No problem with new builds.
Hi Guys,
I had a 2010 June build 520D with a sunroof and I had this problem also will airflow through the door handle when the run roof was vented. I collected a new 2011 Feb build 520D same spec (replacement) from BMW Saturday and this does not have the same problem. They seem to have sealed the doors better in later builds. |

interesting.
mines booked in next week to have software updated to fix the DAB issue and the dealer said they'd look at the sunroof / air leak, said they'd never heard of it....i am hoping they can at least "ask" BMW. surely if its something that BMW have changed on the production line some system somewhere would contain notes on the change and why it was made. |

Just for the record I had a 525Xi 2007 and it had the same problem when you vent the roof there would be significant leak. This also the case with my 2011 535i which I assumed was a common problem to all BMWs!!
Never was the case with any of the Benzs I owned! |

my dealer had a go at fixing this....not a total fix but now it doesn't become apparent until you are above 80MPH so definite improvement. they've rasied a PUMA case with BMW for more advice.

Ok dealer just said they removed door cards and insulated certain spots that the tech thought might let air into handle back. Road test showed issue their still above 80mph so the raised ticket with BMW for further technical help......have to be honest since getting car back I've not tested it myself. |
