Notice a weird noise from my new BMW 550i GT

Maybe this is normal, but it's strange anyhow. The car makes a flatulence noise when you are first starting out, like something grabbing or something. Then, the first two turns after that, it will make the same noise, sounds like it is coming from the wheel well, like maybe the brakes are releasing or something. It seems to go away after three times. Do you think this sounds normal?
Maybe it is one of the cars many systems performing a task?

I do have the active suspension/driving dynamic package.

Could be the self adjusting rear suspension. I only hear it when I park the car and get out. Mind you, I have not paid much attention to it but certainly not noticeable when I start out.

Thanks for the reply, it seems to be normal, and goes away after making a few turns, it's just an odd experience thats all.

Yes, I agree its likely the rear suspension adjusting itself. If it continues to happen stop by to see your SA for diagnosis.

My GT 550 seem to do this sometimes. It does not always happen. I wouldn't worry about it. I think it is charismatic of the dynamic suspension and definitely not something I want to take it in to BMW and have them tell me it is normal. I do not think it is a flaw.

Please let me know what they find! My car hasn't been doing it that much in the past couple of weeks. Let me know if it's truly an issue -- I can't stand going in to BMW to be told they can't replicate it or come out with new door dings or problems that were not there when I left the car,

Have they found anything yet? I noticed my car only makes the bizarre noise occasionally.

That sounds accurate, the problem only occurs in my car, within the first 7 minutes of driving, and only when turning at low speed. Let me know if they actually fixed it.

Thanks so much,
-Rob

seems to be a problem with active roll stabilization in the 5 series that have that. both the sedan and GT. BMW is working on a fix b/c it is affecting lots of cars. Maybe something to do with the power steering line/gas lines/gas tank interaction. I would have your BMW dealer talk to BMW NA. it appears to be a common thing. !! My car still there.!!

I went and scooped up my car this morning, it's clear that they have no official answer for this bizarre phenomena noise yet. The last time my other car spent a week at BMW, it came back with 2 metal creases and a scratch and it took another 3 days for them to fix that! Let me know if they fix your issues, im not going to worry about it right now.

Does BMW still have your car? Have they made any progress yet?

wierd noise

I picked up the new 2011 BMW 550 XI GT this past Saturday...noticed the wierd noise immediately. Everything seemed to be working fine, but I brought the car to the dealer today, Thursday. The main troubleshooting technician drove the car and heard the noise. He said he's seen the problem with other 5 series and 7 series cars. His educated guess was that it had something to do with the stabilizer bars, that because they move hydraulically on either end of the bar, the bushings are being torqued, thus causing the noise.

He said he would post the complaint with BMW NA and was confident there would be a fix designed in fairly short order...a new bushing design or something simple.

It's not that big a deal, now that the tech assured me nothing is going to fall off or break because of the noise.

It's not detracting from my enjoyment of the car thusfar. Every time I drive it, I find something else I like. This car is definitely the total package. It looks great and is amazingly fast and a handling dream...lots of toys, too.

If anyone comes up with a clear diagnosis of the wierd noise problem, I'll be happy to pass it along to my dealer.

If I had to guess, I'd guess a little lithium grease or some moly grease on the bushing to roll bar connection probably would stop it.
