Professional navigation maps update
Hello,
I currently have a 2015 520d SE with professional navigation in the UK but with 2015 maps. I understand that the 2016 maps are already available. Can someone please tell me if this is correct? If it they are available how to update the maps? I read somewhere that it should be automatic via the internal SIM but so far nothing happened. Thanks! Pedro |

Dear zzzzzz.
Thank you for your patience while I looked into this clarification. I can confirm if you have ‘Professional navigation’ in your BMW vehicle from September 2015, BMW navigation will update itself at regular intervals several times a year. Here is some background information zzzzz (I have highlighted in red) Regular updating without registration or additional costs. The system updates itself at regular intervals several times a year, whenever a new map version becomes available. Update progress is shown in the Control Display, while installation couldn’t be simpler as it all takes place automatically. In this way, the most up-to-date map software is provided without delay to ensure flawless navigation. All navigation functions continue to be fully available while the update is in progress. There is no need to either register or log in to a portal for the automatic update. This cutting-edge solution is included as part of the Navigation system Professional, and customers do not have to pay either licensing costs or data transmission charges. Besides automatic map updates, the ultra-fast transmission of very detailed data over the air using a SIM card embedded in the vehicle also paves the way for transferring the Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) used to optimise route calculations. Up-to-date navigation maps for optimum functions. The sophisticated BMW navigation systems are fast, easy to use and reliable. Besides the vehicle data and the route planning algorithms, up-to-date map material is of vital importance here. Updated navigation maps keep the system informed of new roads and modified traffic layouts. This data can be factored in for effective route planning in the same way as information such as altered town boundaries can be transmitted to the electrical system to assist with anticipatory energy management To allow the navigation system to access the very latest map material at all times, BMW ConnectedDrive is taking a different approach with the generation of the Navigation system Professional that is now available. With this system, the navigation maps now update automatically, putting an end to the problem of outdated datasets. The new map data is simply transmitted straight to the vehicle over the mobile phone network using the vehicle’s built-in SIM card, thereby dispensing with the need for manual installation via an external data device Last edited by kinhwear; 12-12-2015 at 04:37 PM.. |

It is not at all clear, I was asking BMW about my 2 week old F11 and I have been told if I had EB then it would work?
I am now trying to find out if my FSC will last for 3 years or not? If not then I will expect a free one each time I update from the dealer. |

If you have that in writing then that should do it. Maps generally issued twice a year; 2016-1 is the latest.

Yes I do and also the BMW info about free map updates for cars from Sep 2015 does not distinguish between models.
I will probably still have a battle, because it is a new offer and the stealers are still confused!! |

I'm expecting my maps to update automatically. I really don't think that EB is necessary for this to work. The technology is with the navigation system, NBT computer and in car SIM so I'm really not sure why EB would be required.

I was told that with EB it accepts a 4G sim card that is required for over the air updates.
However I do not think the current 5 series works that way at all. I think it is still via USB, well it us certainly true for my car, this my entry under booked services:- BMW CONNECTED DRIVE STORE. USB Map Update With the USB map update you can update all your navigation maps with one click – simply load onto a USB stick and install in your car. Always up to date: With the USB map update by BMW ConnectedDrive you can update all maps for your BMW navigation system with only one click and don't have to decide on specific regions or countries. The road to boundless driving pleasure begins at the "My BMW ConnectedDrive" customer portal. Your benefits at a glance: Update your maps comfortably from home Download directly from your "My BMW ConnectedDrive" customer portal Update all maps – e.g. Europe – with one click Easy to install in your car using USB stick Note on data processing Purchased for: BMW 530d ZZ65XXX Current expiry date:30.11.2018 |

UPDATE TO FREE MAP UPDATING
I was slightly concerned when I discovered that my new F11 would not update over the air and thought that I would be battling at every update to get a FSC code from the dealer. There was a FSC code in the folder on delivery and I thought maybe that will work for 3 years, however I have downloaded the 2016-1 maps from one of the sites on the internet and just tried it out. As soon as I plugged the USB stick into the car, it started updating and has now finished without asking for any code!! Result!! So it seems that you really do get free updates for cars delivered from September 2015, you just need to download then yourself and install them. Happy owner here... |

Last time I updated my maps it didn't ask for my FSC code until the following day..... Seems it takes a while for the software to sort itself out ;-)

OK, just been out to check the car and started it and waited about 5 to 10 minutes and no request for FSC.
Not using the car for a couple of days but if it does ask for a code I will report back. |

Kinhwear, interesting that your September 2015 car has reference to map updates in the ConnectedDrive portal whilst I don't have this entry for my November 2015 car. It seems the implementation has a potentially odd phasing.
