Steering Noise
Just got my car last night. The car is making a horrible grinding noise when i turn the wheel to turn at low speed. Any Input would be appreciated from the experienced bmw owners in this forum on what to do.
My car is a new 550i with sport and dynamic handling and pretty much loaded up with all the goodies. |

was this issue resolved? Did the fix it for you? I recently (almost a month ago) purchased a 550i xdrive and am experiencing the same problem (grinding/vibrations) when making turns.

I´ve had exactly this problem on my car since new. Seems to be a hydraulic resonate sound from some ARS valve?

Seems like it´s a lot of 550 owners having this problem in the US.
Any Swedish F10 owner with the same problem?

Steering noise
Still in the shop now for about a week or more since I got the car.I officially had the car for one day before it went straight back to the dealer because of the noise. This has been a real bummer but apparently my dealership is working on it with BMW. I hope that everyone is taking their cars in for this issue so that BMW realizes this is a big problem.....Thanks everyone and I will keep everyone updated if my dealership comes up with a fix.....Thanks so much

Below is the response I received from the Service rep @ the dealership pertaining to the steering/grinding issue:
"Not sure about weather. We drove the car today, noise was there after driving 20 minutes. We put the vehicle in the air and checked underneath. There was a small rub spot on the fuel tank. We adjusted the metal line and put a rubber insulater on it and drove again. No noise this time. We will try again in am." I will keep everyone posted when I hear back from them tomorrow morning. Something tells me, though, that the problem still exists. |

That is exactly what my rep told me today, but i hate to tell them they have kept my car for two weeks and that's the best they could tell me. I seriously doubt that this is the problem because why would it vibrate the steering column during the car making the turn....Well i hope this is the fix but if its not im sure there is a good lawyer i can find to handle this for me because i am tired of dealing with this on a brand new vehicle that i have only driven for one day......Any one heard of LEMON LAW....LOL
Just got back from having the insulators and everything done....Still have the noise so I'm taking the car back..... Last edited by utlax20; 11-17-2010 at 08:28 PM.. |

Still having the issue. Dealership going to hang on to the car until BMW instructs them on the fix. Getting very frustrating. How can BMW manufacture/sell such a vehicle w/ a significant flaw?? They had to know that it existed.

This has been a real bummer but apparently my dealership is working on it with BMW. They have tried the insulation that did not work. Now they have ordered a new ars pump and valve block i think. This has just been the biggest bummer in the sense that you get so excited about a cool new vehicle and this just makes you not even want to own a BMW. I hope that everyone is taking their cars in for this issue so that BMW realizes this is a big problem.....Thanks everyone and I will keep everyone updated if my dealership comes up with a fix.....

Mine does it too
But it is very mild and once or twice. Got 50 miles on it. There is nothing to indicate yet this is not normal though. Does it get worse over time? And what is the worst that can happen?

I am also having this grinding noise to the steering when I turn at a very slow speed. It happened for the first time at a Costco parking lot.
I noticed this after I pack a whole bunch of stuffs to the trunk. I normally have an empty truck. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem since there is a different weight distribution after I put stuffs in the trunk. My car is a 550i which I took delivery on Black Friday. It has the dynamic handling option.

I may have the same problem...
I took delivery of a 550xi M-sport this week and have heard what sounds like a rubbing sound that occurred at low speeds. I know it happened with a couple of right turns, but it doesn't seem to happen all the time. I noticed it happened in reverse as well. I thought it was just in my head, but I guess I'm going to have to take it in. |

utlax20, what have they tried so far on your vehicle that has not worked? Did they go with insulation, or wholesale replacement of the ARS valves or block etc.?

Grinding noise when turning at low speed
I picked up my 2011 550i xDrive last Saturday (12/4) and the moment we pulled out of the dealer's parking lot, it made a grinding noise when we made a right turn onto the road. We didn't think much of it at the time but it has been doing it everyday (regardless of a right turn or left turn), so it's going to back to the dealer on Wednesday.
Has anybody had this problem successfully fixed? If so, what was the issue? Thanks in advance! -Rich |
