Diesel coming stateside - anyone in the know?
OK,
I keep reading threads/articles here and there about the diesel coming...does anyone have anything substantive confirming/denying this (maybe for 2012)? And to push my luck further, if there is a diesel, is "x-drive" going to be available with it? thx Aceman |

It's not a question of if, but when and what. A 5 series diesel will come to the US, but not sure which version. I would imagine that they will release a RWD version first to gauge the interest, then if it does good or better than anticipated, they will open up the variety to a possible x-drive version.

I saw the X5 xDrive40d at BMW Welt and it's quite a machine:
They said "... it is surprising it is built in the United States but not available in the United States" (about the diesel and, I think, about the color). |

AFAIK all "X" machines are built in the US. But I am very disappointed why the folks in the US not promoting the low emission, more mpg diesel machines and interested only in Gas guzzling petrol models?
eg. NYC Yellow cab, the Ford Crown Victoria does only 12 mpg while London's LTI TX4 does about 41 mpg...

The majority of Americans are just environmental pigs.

More like - most americans use $ as a proxy for everything. Since diesel is quite a bit more expensive than gasoline and gas is more popular (hence higher resale), there's no financial incentive to go diesel - so most people just chose with their pocketbooks. The obsessively fuel-economy conscious crowd doesn't have a large overlap with the auto enthusiasts - most of them end up with hybrids.

Here in the UK, and probably most of Western Europe, luckily we have a tax system which encourages low emission vehicles, both company cars and personal vehicles.
Hopefully I'll be picking up my F11 520D next week (two months late, but that's another story...). It really was a no-brainer financially, would have cost me a fortune to go with a larger engine, petrol or diesel. Given than I'm not a particularly quick driver, I just loaded up with toys instead. Have to say, I suspect that if we had the same tax system in the UK as the US, both on fuel (the vast majority of the cost of fuel here is tax) and road/company car tax, then I'm sure large petrol and diesel engines would be more popular here (not that I'm suggesting that's a good thing by the way!) Would be nice if more of the tax collected actually found it's way back into road maintenance though, as it seems to in Germany. |

Oh... don't tell me about the roads... feel sick after recent heavy snow to see the massive amount of potholes. Generally Scottish roads sucks ! If you try to avoid one you will be in two. I feel the difference each time when I cross the border and the bad news is, we will pay more TAX from Tuesday onwards
