Dual vent temperature controls?
Anyone have rhyme or reason as to why some cars have dual front vent temperature controls?
I've seen this in a 2013 M5 and 2013 Activehybrid 5 (both are "no duh"), but I believe I also saw it on a 2013 535i or 550i... Can anyone shed light on this?

Sometimes the driver and passenger have different preferences ... ya know "some like it hot"!

Thank you.
In 2013, 4-zone is only on the Activehybrid 5 and M5, correct?

If you're talking about the wheel dial and the digital control, then yes, it's the stupidest thing. The wheel dial overrides the digital too. It should be simple digital control that controls the temp, not digital then dial to warm.

Dual Zone Climate Control
PLEASE accept my apology sir!
Information about your question is available in the owner's manual - it describes the multitude of individual and personalized climate control settings available for the F10 5 Series BMW. For "run of mill" F10 models it is 2-zone (for driver and front seat passenger); For the Active Hybrid it is 4-zone - adding similar custom settings for rear seat passengers; 4-zone climate control is "standard" in all models of Seven Series as well. The product marketing experts probably decided who the haves and have-nots would be.

There has been a very long a detailed discussion on this (I can't seem to find it right now) but the bottom line is the digital setting is for the overall cabin temperature and the manual vent controls the fresh air directed at the passenger so the passenger can control the "feel". For instance, there are times when I'm cool and want to raise the cabin temperature to 73 but want cooler fresh air blowing on my face. Most of the time the manual vent control is set in the middle but I usually adjust it cooler in the summer and a bit warmer in the winter while leaving the cabin temperature set between 70 and 72.

I believe 4 zone A/C was/is optional on 550 models as well.

Regarding zones in general: If the car is smart enough to know when to turn on and off airbags due to the presence of passengers, why don't they make it know when to use multiple zones?

I find it stupid that I was charged about $1,200 for this function... All i got from this was extra climate controls and sun shades... BMW should just make this standard on a car like the 5..
