Powder Coating Rims

Has anyone powder coated their rims?

I have the stock M-Sport 19" rims and was thinking of getting them powder coated black.

You would however need to remove the tires when they powder coat them. I'd go satin!

I've done it on a set, happy I did. Key, like everything, is finding someone who knows what they are doing.
Downside: if they chip, sticks out like a sore thumb! I went from hyper silver and coated them gloss black. Get a little touch up paint and it will help.

I am going to do my msport wheels a gunmetal grey, I'm jut waiting on my buddy (Trophy truck builder) to have a big batch of stuff so I can add them in for cheaper. should have them done with in about 30 days, i'll post pics once I get them.

I had an old car that I had them do them I had no chipping probs, but if you curb your tire you cant really stop that.

I vote DO IT too!

if the Powdercoater jumps right on it, then yea next day. I had to wait three days last time. I already bought a caliber paint kit (black) so I can keep my self busy while my wheels are gone. I had the car in my own garage, had the rubber removed then just dropped the rims off. I plan on doing that again. Prob have places that will do it all for you just expect an extra cost obviously. I'm cheap lol

If it were me I would leave the car on Jack stands in my own garage but if you don't have that option than yep...you will be at their mercy on how long it takes

I've done it. Around these parts...SoCal, it's around $400 for standard colors + $100 for gloss. Best way is to throw on some temporary wheels, remove the tires and just take them the wheels. Otherwise, they'll charge more. Mine took 4 days.

bumping an old thread

whats the difference between powdercoating the wheels ( 400 in labor with black + gloss ) to plasti dipping ( 150 gloss ) ?? obviously plasti dipping is the cheapest way to go but what are the downside of it if there are professionally coated ( 5 to 10 times ? )

I've used plastidip but have never had them 'professionally' plastidipped. From my experience, plastidip will never have the gloss and multilayered smooth look like powdercoating. Powdercoating black with gloss will look shiny and wet but plastidip will always have a orange peel look if you look closely no matter how professionally its done. Also, powdercoating is permanent so it'll withstand mutiple tire changes whereas you'll most likely have to reapply plastidip after a tire/wheel change. If it's a lease vehicle, you can do plastidip but if the wheels are yours to own, I'd invest in a good powdercoating.

I actually plasti dipped my style 65s on my E39. The key to not getting the orange peel effect is many many light coats and a 5 or 6 coats of Glossifier. There are a ton of tutorials on how to do it and the beauty of it is you only pay $5 a can at Home Depot so if you don't like it or mess it up you just take it off.

Side note...not many wheels more complex than style 65s so you're wheels would be a breeze.

that looks really good! is that gunmetal? i've been thinking about just changing things up on my wheels too but wondering if my wheels would be a PITA to remove the plastidip later? i could cover up the rivets?

I've had my previous wheels done by California Wheels in Campbell, Tommy does good work!

i dropped my old wheels off and he had them done in like 4 days.

He does them in house now. Highly recommend them!

I individually taped all the rivets on my Style 19s and then dipped them black. They came out dope but damn it took forever. Colored wheels with chrome/polished rivets always look good IMO.

Found a few pics...this was black plasti dip with glossifier. I used a full can of each per wheel.

^^^^^^

That turned out really good! So 1 can per wheel? How many cans of glossifier did you need?

I probably went overboard with 1 can per wheel but if you don't put it on thick, it looks like crap and it's hard to take off. I went with 1 can of gloss and 1 can of dip per wheel.

How many coats did you do with one can? I guessing plastidip has less product inside cause I'm thinking regular paint you can get 20x coats on one wheel
