Two BMW Turbo Diesel Engines Coming to US - 180HP 2.0L 4-Cyl and 255HP 3.0L 6-Cyl

BMW has confirmed that two diesel engines will be making their way to the US.

One is a 2.0L single-turbo twinscroll 4 cylinder direct injection diesel engine outputting 180 HP and 280 LB-FT torque, the same stats as the N47 engine which currently powers the F30 320d and F10 520d. As for consumption and performance, the 320d, for example, achieves an impressive 52.2 combined MPG (US) (40.5 city / 61.8 hwy), with a factory claimed 7.1 secs 0-60 mph.

The other diesel will be a 3.0L twinscroll 6 cylinder turbo outputting 255 HP (no official torque number yet, but expect 400+ lb-ft torque). This will be an all new engine not seen before in any other models.

These engines will be paired with 8 speed automatics and make use of SCR technology (urea based "selective catalyst reduction") to meet the stringent US diesel emission standards.

BMW has not yet confirmed which models will receive these engines, but they may see duty in a future 225d, 325d, 525d, 235d, 335d or 535d, as well BMW has not yet confirmed which models will receive these engines (nor when), but the 4-cylinder may see duty in a future 220d, 320d, 520d (or perhaps labeled for the NA market as 225d, 325d, 525d), while the 6-cylinder will power models labeled 25d, 30d, or 35d, as well as their counterparts in the xDrive models. No matter the nomenclature, this is wonderful news for the BMW's NA customers!

Wow. Seriously it's about time. But like the Lochiness Monster, Bigfoot and Santa Claus, I've heard this before but still have yet to see it.

It may just have been rumors which ended up in vaporware previously, but this news is by way of official announcement by BMW. None of the specs are speculative and they have been provided by BMW.

I hear you, but how can you sell Hybrids and Diesels in the same market without cannibalizing sales? Who knows, smarter people than me make the call.

That's for their business people to figure out I'm just glad that the US will be getting not just one, but two diesel engines

Exqueeze me, but as a Scotsman, I have to ask why you have dragged Nessie into this!

'bout freakin time. After driving a 320d in Munich I said I would buy that car today and drive the wheels off it for as long as I could... until I realized we couldn't get them stateside.

If the bigger diesel 6 has decent economy numbers I foresee a new F10 soon

I had a E90 335d as a loaner, and I swear I wanted to trade my F10 550i in for one. The car had almost as much torque as my car in such a small package. I beat the piss out of it, and still got 39mpg! My F10 in the same scenario would have given me 14-16mpg if I was lucky.

I hope they bring over more diesel engines, what's not to love about awesome gas mileage and 400+lbs of torque!

I think that BMW (along with a large number of other manufacturers) like to provide a wide choice. With a premium brand like BMW, I imagine they are hoping to take the custom from their competitors, as opposed from their current base.

BMW's - mostly 1er and 3er - are highly numerous in the UK. We have a very full line up of models here. I imagine that a large part of the success of BMW in the UK is down the the huge choice of models and engine variants.
