BEWARE: Run flats (durability/availability)

I know there is a wheel/tire forum, but this is important for all owners of 5-series with the 19" run-flats (Goodyear Excellence):

I hit a small pothole today doing about 30MPH, and got a "bubble" in the tire.

EVERY DEALER WITHIN 60 MILES DID NOT HAVE THE TIRE. (some didn't even know what it was since the F10 isn't in their parts system)

Nor did Butler Tire, Discount Tire, or any other Goodyear retailer.

I had to order it from Discount, who actually went through their Michelin distributor (?!). There are seven (7) in stock at a NY warehouse.

One other note - BMW will gladly charge you full price ($380?) for the tire, whereas some retailers will call Goodyear and file a warranty claim (free road-and-hazard on semi-new tires). Thanks BMW!

I've been there already with that issue! I couldn't imagine running 19s (of course with snows) in the winter when potholes get worse.

Tire Rack has them (front in my case) for $366+shipping.

But it blows my mind that a flat or damaged sidewall (RFT support) could result in a car at the dealer for 3-5 days.

First day I had my 2011 535xi I hit a pothole and got a bubble also. I live in NYC. Luckily I am still able to drive my car. I bought the rim/tire protection. I will get it replaced in a week. the dealer had to order one. They didn't have any in stock. They didn't ask ant questions. My suggestion is "get the rim/tire protection". I guess BMW is mighty happy I didn't bend the rim too!

If I lived in NY I would probably adopt 17" wheels and all-season tires. Too many potholes.

Honestly Goodyear (or Michelin) will replace the tire for free if it's within a certain tread depth (which mine was w/ only 2000 miles on the car).

If nothing else, I thank the people who responded. Misery loves company, or something like that.

Exclamation

I took delivery of a 2011 550i in late July and had all 4 tires replaced for Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. The factory installed Goodyear Excellence has low noise and rides very smoothly but I got a bump on three tires on my first long trip in the car!! I've had better luck with the Potenza's. I would have preferred Michelins but BMW said they did not recommend any RFT Michelins for the new 5 series. Go figure. I had Michelin Pilot Sport ZP on my 2004 530 and they drove very nicely and were more durable than the Potenzas but since BMW was replacing the tires for free, I did not argue

That is a contradiction of BMW. The xdrive comes with either Goodyear Excellence RF or Michelin Primacy ZP. Both are All Season.

I had talked to the local Goodyear Dealer a couple of weeks ago and he thought that any occurances such as you have described are covered under their year warrantly on new car tires. Not having them in stock is a whole other hassle.

I hit a pothole on the third day I bought the car and it bubbled too, it costs 390.
I couldn't get it anywhere but my dealership too, they said that road hazard doesn't count in the warranty...

Here is a suggestion for dealers who want to enhance their service reputation: keep a few spare wheel/tire combinations on hand to lend to RFT pothole victims while theirs are being repaired or replaced.

Here's my experience http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=452737

So how do you end up with your tires? did they replace it for free?
They wouldn't replace mine since I told them I hit a pothole

That's funny, because my 550 with sport package came from the factory with 19" Michelin Primacy HP ZP's

Dealers will not replace tires for free.

Goodyear retailers will.

The fact that people have two or three bubbles in tires is a major issue. Although tire retailers have commented/confirmed that this is a common occurance on low-profile (45-series and lower) tires.

Note that I never (not once) had or heard of an issue on my Nissan GT-R, but the sidewalls were like iron. They're so stiff that you have to replace tires if you ever remove them from the rim.

Michelins are fitted to UK 5 series Cars.

Is the possible Michelin issue, tire size, summer or all season tire related?

My issue is with the Goodyear Excellence, not Michelin. There was a running change from Goodyear to Michelin in late August or early September. Not sure if it was supply or quality related.

Goodyear wouldn't be my first choice for a high-performance, low-profile tire.
