Reasonable pricing for coding

I have contacted a couple people regarding coding.

Does $190 sound reasonable for these enhancements?

That is on the expensive side. Should be able to get it done for about $100 or so.

There are several board members that will do it free. I'm surprised people would charge for this.

Some of these are available by default on the 2014 that aren't indicated as such - screen to configure sport mode, power / tq charts, etc.

I think I'd do it myself for that price. Plus you'll always have the option to fiddle with it later if you want to reverse anything.

The big issue with paying for coding is that it can so easily be overwritten by warranty work, software upgrades and the like. If I were going to pay someone, I'd want the confidence that they would be around to redo the work, without further charge, after that sort of thing happens.

If you are willing to invest in cables etc. and spend time, do it yourself. If someone is going to do it for you, you should pay the person for the effort. It is a 60K+ car and $100 bucks for coding is not much.

$100 for Alex@Alpine (he's on the board, search) to remote-code everything for my car. He'll send you the cable for a refundable $50 deposit. When I was looking around there was one shop charging $400!

I'd rethink the "cameras on at any speed". What's the point? And you lose the much more useful feature that they currently turn themselves off after you start driving away.

But I'm totally comfortable paying someone a reasonable $100 fee for their time and expertise.

Wow $190 is steep. DIY. It's really not hard at all. Most of those takes just a few minutes to do.

You can do it yourself, but it will take awhile to get everything together and learn how to do it. You'll have to download E-SYS, then download all of the most current PSDZ data. Which is around 3-4 gigs of data. Then you'll have to find someone to sell you the "patch" and "token" to make the software work. Next you'll have to get a quality cable. The best place most order from is a place in Hong Kong called one stop electronics. Takes about 3 weeks to get. Then you'll have to read all the manuals and how to's. It'll cost you at least $80 and how ever much time it takes you to learn. So it all comes down to how much time and effort you want to put into it. To code the list you provided would take at least an hour. Sometimes these cars are a little finicky. You know how it is when you're dealing with computers. If you want it coded over the internet, I would go with Rich. He's V12 on bimmerpost and octopump on bimmerfest. I know him personally and he's top notch and very thorough. By far my favorite item I've coded was enabling the glare free high beams on my LED headlights. I thought they were amazing before, now I'm speechless. That's my .02 cents

Well, coding should be free as all the software and the instruction is all available freely.
The only thing you are paying is the labor as skalberti mentioned, it does takes time and effort for one to learn and experiment with one, also to code your car does take some time. If one doesn't even ask for a fee, do them a favor and appreciate their time.

You can always tell the dealership not to update the firmware in the car. Unless you are having an issue with the car, I wouldn't suggest to do any update. It sometimes may open up a new can of worms.

I've got mine done for free, from a friend. It's pretty straight forward once you have the software.

a few guys on the forum offer unlimited coding for $100. I had my car coded initially by Alex@alpine but after dealer wiped out the coding from firmware upgrade, I got it coded by MWPos for $100 as well. I know it was unlimited coding from Alex but I did not want to drive from San Diego to LA (which can easily be a 4 - 6 hour drive round trip depending on traffic). So I found someone local to me (MWPos).

You don't make $60k by throwing away $100 at a time.

My salesman tried the "What's a $1000 when you're buying an $80k vehicle?" BS tactic. I quickly shut him up. Dude lives in an apartment 30 miles away because he can't afford rent closer to DC and he talks like he's got money to throw away.

Just wanted to give yet another huge shout out to Rich a/k/a Octopump a/k/a V12!

If anyone’s interested in coding, Rich is your man. Whether he meets you in person in the NY-NJ-CT tristate area or sends you a cable anywhere in the US, so he can code remotely, a quick forum search yields the fact that the whole community loves him.

Rich is the most patient and thoughtful provider of any consumer service I’ve ever come across, and the value he unlocks is fantastic!

Thanks again Rich!
