Engine Oil, Air Filter and Coolant Costs; Dealer vs. Indy

My car is at the dealer for a bubbled tire.

Service Advisor just e-mailed me stating I need:

Oil Service: $168.41
Engine Air Filter: $146.95
Coolant Flush: $275.97

How do I take care of this more economically at an indy?

Should I buy the parts and bring them to an indy?

Any great places to purchase same?

Thanks!

Rockauto is your friend for parts. Assuming you have a 550i, you can get both filters for 32 bucks before tax and shipping. Easy DIY.. while you are in the air box yank the pre-charcoal air filters for better flow...

Oil filter, Mann, is 16 bucks there. Get oem bmw oil or Ll-01 approved oil like Mobil-1 0-40w (9 quarts).

Coolant flush? I have no friggin idea.

N63 use 9 and haft qt I think. OEM BMW oil is 5w-30 castrol. Can you use 0w-40?

I would pay for the oil change and coolant flush. Too messy and too much work to be worth doing it yourself, IMO. For either air filters (engine and cabin), it's an easy replacement and fairly cheap.

Mobil-1 0-40w is their euro formula and is BMW LL-01 approved... so yes, you can use it. A lot of n54 335i guys have used it with great success...

Dealer where I used to live at charged 150$ for oil change, the dealer where I live at now charges 110$ which is way reasonable ! 170$ is just stupid.

The air filter is ridiculously easy. Do not pay the dealer $146.95 for 5 minutes of work with a screwdriver. Go buy a filter from the dealer, buy a filter from Rockauto, or buy a K&N filter and do it in your driveway.

Is a K&N filter superior to the OEM BMW one?

Improved performance and/or fuel economy?

There is no K&N filter available for the n63 550i... the only thing is a custom filter/scoop setup from badblack...

Oops, sorry. Wasn't paying enough attention. No K&N for the 550, which is kind of odd.

Still, changing an air filter or two is in no way worth $150.
