F11 520D (B47) Coolant usage

Hi all,

The low coolant light came on my car this morning (2014 520d B47). The car has done about 22k miles and needed about 0.8 litres of coolant to top it up. The dealer said this was normal but I have never had to top up coolant in any of my BMWs over the past 15 years (10 or so cars). There doesn't appear to be any leaks.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Cheers

Never had to top up on any on my previously owned 5 series....but that's not to say it isn't considered to be normal. Maybe worth just popping back to dealership in say 1 - 2 months and see if levels have dropped again, and if so that would suggest a leak / fault of some sort.

I would ask them, if it's normal then where is the coolant going. Bet they can't give a rational answer to that question, just trying to fob you off by the sound of it.

+1. It's a sealed system...nothing gets in, nothing gets out...unless it's leaking.

I am on my second f11, so that's 5 years and 100,000 miles. Never seen a coolant warning.

Sorry for the late update on this!

The EGR cooler was leaking and replaced by the dealer under warranty. The service advisor said that they have done quite a few recently!

So it isn't normal then? Statements like that certainly don't inspire confidence, especially when they subsequently find there is a fault
